I hope someone may be able to adise me on this camera, I currently own a fuji s9500 and am considering on upgrading to the 400D following the some positive reviews, 2 things I wanted an opinion on is the quality that much better in dslr's considering the price range of the 400d and is the camera that much better than the fuji zoom camera to warrant an upgrade.

I own the 400D and thought of getting the S9600 / S9100 as a backup camera as I also own the F31fd and have used several generations of Fuji cameras and have liked all of them. However, I ended up not buying the S9600 as I found it had difficulty focusing on some cameras in a display case when it was at an angle. I tried again and again but not much luck, so I decided not to buy it.

I don't think you will find that the quality of the 400D will be a lot better. However, I can only speak from my experience with the F31fd which is only 6 MP.

If you like taking action shots and sports, the 400D would be better as its focus should be quite a bit faster as well as have less shutter lag. Its high ISO performance is better too.

On screen, shots from the 400D have a more solid look. Fuji shots tend to have what I call a "feathery" look with very tiny dots here and there whereas those from the 400D are smoother without losing detail.

If you take a lot of still, posed shots, then the faster performance of the 400D will not be an advantage.

In terms of quality, I still prefer using the 400D.

Some users have switched from DSLRs to Fuji S6000's or S9600's because they don't want to carry so many lenses. For myself, my general-purpose lens is the Sigma 18-200 which I use 95% of the time and it gives good consumer quality comparable, I believe, to the S9600 without having to change lenses. The only other lens I own is the Canon 50mm f1.8 which gives exceptional quality and sharpness though "cheaply" built.

It's a hard decision to make. You will have to hold the 400D, take some shots with it and feel how much you like it and look at the samples on-screen comparing them to similar images from your S9500. Except for high ISO shots, general everyday shots should not be too much different.

Are you dissatisfied in some way with your S9500 that the 400D can solve or do? If your photography is more casual than serious then the answer should be closer to "no" than "yes".

Start saving up for good lens or else there is no point to switch to DSLR.

Even the cheap Xti requires good optics. So don't expect Xti with Kit lens will be much better image quality than the Fuji you already own. Aside from image quality, there are other things worth consider. Manual focus and manual mode is much easier on DSLR.

Don't agree that you need good optics with the 400d.

I had a brief encounter with the Fuji 9500 & soon got my money back then went out & brought a 400d.

Even with the kit lens on the 400d has much better picture quality by far. The quality at high ISO on the 400d is miles ahead of the Fuji the ISO 1600 on the 400d is like ISO 400 on the Fuji.

I would not compare the 9500/9600 with the 400d as it is simply miles ahead. So you have no need to save for any high end lenses as if stopped down the Canon kit lens will be fine for starters & produce a much better picture that the Fuji but only if you know how to work the 400d off auto mode as the fuji will produce a much more processed picture from auto so to get the canon to do this you need to tweak & customise the settings, saturation, contrast etc.

Buy one or get a D80 & I guarantee you will be happy with the results.

thanks for the input. There is a lot to consider, its just that I find the s9500 not very good in low light or action even with tweaking of settings etc, maybe its just me.

Hey booboo ,I thought this was a forum to gain an insight on other peoples views and experiences in order to RECEIVE a balanced view and make a decision based on that as well as hands on experience with the canmera, camera stores only have 1 goal and that is to make money , therefore I would think that people should be able to ask other users their opinions without being made to look and feel stupid .
