Embedding images (only available to registered users) - To embed an image or photograph simply paste (or type) the URL (web address) of the image into your message (eg.

), images more than 480 pixels wide will be scrollable. To link to an image WITHOUT EMBEDDING IT simply add a semicolon (;) to the end of the url (eg.

;)

This is entirely accurate.
  • No, you can't directly cut-and-paste images. dpreview is not an image hosting service. There is no 'attach image' button.
  • Images must be on a web server. An image on your hard drive is not going to be accessible unless it's accessible to a web server.
  • Link to the IMAGE, not to the page containing the image. A lot of new users make this mistake. The JavaScript is not likely to be rewritten to know about the page layout of every image gallery, so you MUST give a direct link to the image itself. For instance, if you're using Flickr, if you're using a link that starts with
http://www.flickr.com/ ; ...

it's probably the WRONG link -- probably the link to the page.

The images are actually hosted via

http://farm#.static.flickr.com/ ...

and end in jpg where # is a server number. Some image services make it harder to find the image url than others.

A 'pbase' URL should probably start with

http://i.pbase.com/ ...

and end in a .jpg, not start with http://www.pbase.com/ .

And so forth.
  • For the image-wrapping JavaScript to be used, the URL must have a recognizable extension such as .jpg.

Many discussion forums have their own picture-posting features, but this one puts the responsibility on you, to establish an album independently and add links to the pictures you have there to your messages. There are several good picture-storing websites that offer free accounts for this. Many ISPs give you a free picture album, which you could use for this purpose.

Leejay, I am a newbie and can't figure out what you mean. I uploaded a picture on flickr. You said:

I don't know how to find the link you are referring to. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not a heavy Flickr user -- but let's see.

One of my images is viewable on
http://www.flickr.com/photos/62617544@N00/257687225/

That's the link to the page containing it. If I want to actually embed the image, however, I've got a couple of options.

One is to click the 'all sizes' option above the image. There are multiple sizes available -- 'medium' seems appropriate for this forum, so I'll click that on the list at 'Available sizes' near the top.

That brings me to
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=257687225&size=m
which includes a link named 'Download the Medium size', namely
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/117/257687225_c5d06a64da_d.jpg

(which I extracted using Firefox's right-click menu). If I hadn't added a semicolon to that link, the following would have resulted:

Note that the following link

isn't wrapped in the JavaScript that embeds the image, even though I did NOT use a semicolon, because it ends in "?v=0", not .jpg.

If I loaded the same
http://www.flickr.com/photos/62617544@N00/257687225/

page in IE 7, 'Copy Shortcut' seems to be the appropriate bit in the right-click menu for getting the link to the imag efile.

okay-here goes:

I'll see if that works.
OK you are up and running.

But for the benefit of others if you check "Preview" before posting you should see the image. If you do not then it is back to the drawing board for you.

If you see the image when previewing but it is not there when you post that means the album from which you are posting is locked and/or has no public access. You will need to sort out that problem via your hosting site to make the image visible on DPreview.
