I have a new Gateway Laptop withVista Premium Edition

I need some help with my Vista Thumbnail Viewers. It is a strange combination and has differnt problems depending whether I am viewing photo thumbnails on "Documents" (this is like "Windows Explorer" or "File Manager") or "Windows Photo Gallery".

I have a Sony A100 DSLR and a Nikon Point & Shoot CP5700.

Stange Things: First, I got prompt and Dowloaded Sony software that allows me view thumbnails of all Sony RAW in both applications.

Next, I can view JPEG thumbnails in the "Windows Photo Gallery" but not in "Docucments". Instead of getting a true tumbnail, Vista will give a "postage stamp" generic thumbnail image.

Then for TIFF, I cannot view a thumbnail image in either "Photo Gallery" or "Documents" nor will the simple photo viewer show the image. Instead I have to go to "Mircrosoft Digital Imge Starter Edition Edition 2006 Editor" to even see the image.

This is a serious screw up. I think it must have to do with the various drivers and associations. Never the less, TIFF & JPEG should NOT be a problem.

Can anyone help?

How Vista shows a folder is based on a template.
right click on the folder and choose Customize This Folder.

If you want to have thumbnails change the template from documents to Pictures and videos.

Not sure what is with the Tiffs. Even in Document mode the generic should change to tiny thumbnail.

Not sure why that is not working.

You're probably in Tiles view in the Documents folder. There's a button on the toolbar to select the View. Change it to Thumbnail. Or search the product help for Thumbnail view.

TIFF is not a single image format. Depending on the actual image content and compression methods used Windows may or may not be able to display the content. This is probably what you're seeing. Particularly if Photo Gallery can't display the TIFF image at all. You could examine the TIFF properties in a program that gives detailed info to see what compression method is being used, but I don't know that you'll find a solution to this.

no thumbnail option on my version of Vista......Geek Squad at Best Buy couldn't rig it either.....I've written the blackhole at Gateway & Microsoft.

it's a glitch, somehow the pointers aren't engaging to the right programs

Ken, I got it new The first day that the Vista machines were out. Perhaps in Jan?

My features have a prompts for "icons" not for "thumbnails". Obviously Sony knows what they are doing and sent some pointers that go to the RAW developer S/W. MS (Gateway?) on the otherhand did a half way job with JPEG & TIFF side. I'm not sure why you say that the TIFF format isn't comaptable. Certainly the MS Digital Image S/W will read & edit it. Just as any S/W I've used. Just not happy with any of the Thumbnails you can use when quickly want to move & edit stuff.

I didn't say that about tiffs. But there are some variations that might noe work.. But I have tiffs thumbnailing.

How are things working in the pictures folder?

Is the Vista Home or Vista basic?

I have Ultimate... but I don't think it should be that different there...

Documents is not set up to thumbnail but if you open it. righ click in the file area between the file icons there should be a customize option change the template t photos.

Either you have a variation of Tiff the system doesn;t get or maybe there is some kind od FAX software installed that has taken over the tiff format since that is the common format faxes are stored in and Sony loves to add lots of free stuff to their computers.

Mark, I've changed these Customized settings as well as the Geek Squad guys, and it makes no differnce. It was already set to photos. And it's not just the TIFF it's the JPEGs as well.

The Sony RAW is OK.

Right click on Computer in the start menu, choose properties. On the left side choose advanced system settings. Click the settings button under performance, then check "Show thumbnails instead of icons". Not sure if this will resolve your issue or not.

Thank you KSJ. I did find the option (I didn't know it was there). It was checked as an option for Window to decide...or something to the affect. I set it to custom, double checked the option & hit apply.

it worked.

Thank you. You apparently know more than the Geek Squd & Gateway Tech support.
