Something as simple as the Shadows & Highlights tool in Elements 5 or CS2/3 can open the shadows a bit and brighten those areas up nicely. Then, in curves, you lift the middle a bit to boost the brightness of the whole shot if necessary.

Should add a little "pop" ...

Note that, once you have done this, you may want to experiment with a wee bit of local contrast enhancement (search that on google) in a layer and fade it to taste. That way, if you lowered the contrast too much, you can restore some of the pop.
