Indoor Sports D40 kit (pics)

Brought my D40 with kit lens and no external flash to the opening session of the NCAA tournament in Chicago last Friday to watch the Georgia Tech game.

I learned quite a bit more that day about using Shutter priority mode and ISO levels to try and get the sharpest photo I could but still not be too dark.

Here's a couple of my best examples. I now understand better how a "faster" zoom lens is important as using the kit lens at the 55mm end limits me to F/5.6 which is not as good at very fast shutter speeds. Taking hundres of shots was a great way to learn more about how the camera works.

Considering the distance, would an external flash (SB400, 600) help much? I took photos with and without the flash and I couldn't tell any difference past the first 10 rows of people. None of the light made it to the court itself.
