First dSLR coming; first lens / lenses recommendation?

Although I have read this forum a lot, this is my first post here. I think this is the kind of question you get a lot and I hope I won't irritate you with my questions. But to the point:

I am planning to buy a Canon 30D as my first dSLR and I am a bit baffled with all the different lenses. The Canon 30D is sold here as a body and also in two different kits: 30D + 18-55 kit lens / 30D + 17-85 IS USM lens. The latter kit costs 400 euros more than the first one and the first kit costs 100 euros more than the body. The questions are as follows:

1. Is the 17-85 IS USM worth the extra money?
2. Is the 18-55 any good for a beginner?
3. Should I just buy the body and get some other general purpose lens?
4. Which other lens(-es) would be good for general purpose?
5. What lens would you recommend for macro shoots (insects)?
6. What lens would you recommend for bird shoots?

Remember that I am buying my first dSLR and I don't need to have everything immediately. My first goal is to get an all-around lens; just something I can practice with in the beginning. Any other comments are also welcome. Thanks for the help already (if I get any).

Kind Regards,
