5D is justified, 3D is not.

That's the short version. For those who want the full-frame and high image quality in a compact package. BUT they deliver it in such a way that it doesn't canibalize too heavily the 1Dx, where the ultimate in pro-level handling resides.

In film, the media was fungible - anyone could use any film stock in any body, so the model differentiation HAD to occur at the body features level.

In digital, the media (sensor) is static once you have purchased the product, so this is another area that they can differentiate on, and get a justifiable price break. In this case, "functionally" the 30D and 5D are virtually identical, but you can get a big image quality increase, depending on how and what you shoot.
