It ain't easy . . .

I have had my 70-200 VR for a while now and wasn't getting the results everyone seemed to think the lens was capable of. When I shot outside at my Daughters Lacross games, things were fine. Once I brought it inside for either LAX or basketball, I got dark blurry photo's.

I hope my continuing learning journey can help others.

I use a D50.

I tried using sports mode since it center focuses and tries to get a high shutter; it worked fine outdoors.

I tried manually setting to f2.8 thinking that would let the photons flood in and I would be fine - I couldn't get enough shutter speed to stop the action.

Finally, I let all of the threads I had heard here coalesce and I went manual. f2.8 or 3.2, center focus, & ISO 1600. with a shutter set to no lower then 1/125 sec.

BREAKTHROUGH! I actually started to get crisp well-exposed photos that froze the action. I will continue to work on the manual settings and how to tweak them as needed. Just as important, now I can start to focus on and improve the actual images captured.

Here are a couple of shots from my sons hoops game. C&C welcome on all aspects.

I am just glad they came out viewable.
