Video card problem

I am using a video card in my XP computer that has both a VGA and DVI output. I was using the DVI, and for a week or so, had to use the VGA because I needed that monitor on a new computer.

So then I decide to hook up that old monitor to the old computer, and it will not see the DVI connection. It will run on VGA, but when I hook up DVI, nothing. It's like the VGA has become default.

How do I get my computer to see DVI again?

Thanks,

Dennis

have you tried connecting the dvi cable (only) and then rebooting?

that SHOULD be enough.

both ports 'talk' from the display to the host cpu, so when the dvi
(only) cable is plugged in, the display should 'talk back' to the
host and it should KNOW which wire the display is now on.
I think a new boot is required (at least it did for me when I had that problem), so I shut down when analog was on, swapped cables, rebooted, and the DVI connection worked.

It is not the video card, it is the cable
Try this. Plug first in the CP and then to monitor.
If not working. Plug first in the monitor and than to CP.
It builds sometimes magneticfield

say WHAT about magnetic fields??

one thing that was not really addressed is: are you SURE the connection is TIGHT?

seriously. vga is a bit more forgiving (the connector was better designed). dvi CAN be funky if not tightly connected. seriously - try reconnecting the cable and screw it down with the included twisties and see if that helped. it 'fixed' a problem on my home DVI tv set - it was entirely just a connection (mechanical) issue for me.

Thanks all for the replies. I tried rebooting a number of times. I am starting to wonder if it is the cable. I did use a new cable when I went back to the DVI. I will also try making sure it's on tight.

It turns out the DVI cable was bad. Works fine now with a new cable. Thanks all for your offers of help.
