Why not, exactly the same has already been done with the Nikon
D2Xs (but with 1.5x crop/12MP/5fps and 2x crop/7MP/8fps).

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure Canon would see it as an indictment of
their sensor.

"Are you trying to imply that we have to decrease the number of
active photosites to achieve an acceptable frame rate?"

No, I suppose I don't. Technology wise we've come a long way since the D2X was introduced 2.5 years ago...

On the other hand, if I were a Canon user, I wouldn't have seen any harm in a 1.6x/6.5MP/8fps EF-S crop mode on the 1DsmkII. It's not like you have to use such a feature, but I bet some users would've found it helpful.

For a future Nikon FF I personally wish for 22.5MP FF, 10MP DX crop (automatic for DX lenses) -- PLUS a 5.6MP 2x crop for the times when you're focal length limited. Sure, you can always crop in PP, but in-camera real time cropping saves memory space, saves time/battery for backups in the field, increases fps (at least on a FF DSLR) and increases buffer depth.
