300mm F2.8 is ASF II worth a few hundred more?

I never compared the tripod mount on my AF-S II with a "I" model, but it doesn't seem to give me any trouble. Maybe at Bjorn's level, he notices a difference that matters to him.

I was looking for a slowish shot I've taken with this, but all I can find right now is a 1/320 @ effective f/7.1 taken with my 300 2.8 AF-S II + TC-17E II (510mm) shot on a monopod.

Here's one at 1/1600 @ effective f/5, same setup, but it's at a pretty good speed and the mount may not play an issue here. The image is extremely sharp, notice the fly on the lion's nose.
