D2Xs and Birds in flight - Help needed

Hello All,

I have been out experimenting with shooting birds in flight at a lake here in Dallas to try to improve my wildlife shooting ability. I normally shoot landscapes, but have gotten the bug and have been incorporating more and more wildlife into my shooting.

Here is the setup I have been using.....
Nikon D2Xs, Nikon 200-400VR f/4 and the TC-14EII teleconverter.

I get some great shots of the birds on the water or on branches, but have had a really hard time finding the best combination of setting for both my camera and my lens to track the birds in flight.

i have been trying to shoot: ducks, American pelicans and gulls. Unfortunately the gulls are the ones most often in flight. I am finding that their sporadic flight is very hard to track and the focus jumps around a lot.

Can anyone experienced in this type of photography tell me how you would approach this.

It is very much appreciated.
