OK, I know there's probably been a ton of threads on this, so I apologize in advance.

I just bought a 5D (should come today), moving up from a 20D, and I just realized that if I bought a lens with it, I would get double the rebate on both items. Duh.

Part of the reason I didn't think about it was 1) buying the 5D pretty much tapped me out, and 2) I don't really need any lenses (other than a good 1x macro).

Here's what I have:

17-40mm L
28-70mm L (the old one, but a great lens)
70-200mm f4 L
100-400mm L IS

My 20D is going to become my back up body, and I was thinking of just leaving the body cap on it until I needed it, but now I'm thinking that maybe getting the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS might be a good idea. With the extra $340 rebate, it ends up costing me $50, and it might be a good lens to keep on the 20D.

What say you? Is this a decent lens? I only have experience with L glass, but on a 1.6x camera, it might be fine, yes?

I should get the EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6, which I have no need for. But the extra $320 in rebate is significantly more than the $190 the lens costs, and n I could sell it on eBay and actually make a reasonable profit of nearly $300.

Anybody done this?

I have almost the same lens lineup as you, but not the 100-400, so I got the 100 2.8 macro, a nice addition to my kit. My other choice was the 85 1.8 for low-light. I do have the 50 1.8 and have now gotten some wonderful available light shots at ISO1600 with my new 5D and that lens.

Tony-

I think the rebate program is over.

Kind Regards

Unfortunately, I never managed to actually get any money back on any Canon rebates. They always get rejected for one reason or another. :-(

I'd get the 28-135 IS. It's a great lens.

My bad then.

My Mail-In Rebate Claim Form says "Purchase(s) must take place between October 15, 2006 and January 13, 2007. Claims must be postmarked by February 15, 2007, and received by March 1 2007."

Did they extend the rebate program? Or is it a new offer?

Kind Regards.

All the classic portrait lenses (85 f/1.2L & f/1.8, 100 f/2, 135 f/2L) are eligible for rebates, as are the 100 f/2.8 and 180 f/3.5 macro lenses.

50-1.4 for lowlight without a flash, 35Lis better but more $$$.
The 5D is amazing in the dark.

They must have extended it. My rebate form says "February 19, 2007". B&H also was very clear that there was a rebate on the camera.

BTW, it came about an hour ago. It's so like the the 20D, that there is zero learning curve. Nice!

Now that I've played with it a bit, I'm beginning to notice a gap in my lenses between 70mm and 100mm. With the 20D that wasn't so much of an issue because the 70mm was really like 110mm, but with the 5D that's a region I need. Damn.

The 85 f/1.8 becomes a freebie with the doubling of your 5D rebate and the rebate on the lens itself.
