few noobish questions:

I was wondering, what good and buget level external storage for photos people can recomend to use. I am planning to go on trip, and I want to shoot in RAW...

And I didn't found one feature on K10D. Is it possible to connect external HDD to camera using USB and with few button presses upload pictures from camera to HDD? I know that there are few devices where you can insert card and make copy, but why there is no option to transfer pictures from camera to external disk and maybe even browse images from external disk on camera display. It should be quite easy to implement, as camera know how to act as disk and can read card as disk, so there should not be some hardware limitations, just software.

Or have I missed something?

Look at the compact drive PS70X i think it's called

That would be really good if you could browse the hard disk with the camera and copy files - you should work it out and patent it. Awsome

You should look for USB OTG (On The Go) enabled devices. I have a iRiver MP3 40 Mbyte HDD player that has this facility but I don't remeber its name. However it's out of stock now. I tested it with my Pentax K100D, I can't say if it would work with K10D but I'd rather suppose it would. The only problem is speed, it's very slow.

I think what you are looking for is a external disk drive with "USB OTG" or "On The Go" capabilities. This allows you to transfer files from the camera directly to the disk without any PC or card reader.

If you do a google search for "USB OTG Disk" you should come across lots of options. Many also allow connection to a TV to browse and view the photos.

The one I have is by Storex and is called CLUB Pocket-Disk MPiX , it is 100GBytes and cost around 150Euros almost a year ago.

Nowdays you can also find MP3 players with built in screens and OTG functions such as Archos gmini 402, though these are a bit more expensive.
Cheers

I use my iPod 20Gb with Apple Camera Connector.

It is a bit slow, but with the iPod I store both my music and my photos when I'm on trip.

It can't display RAW on the internal display, only JPEG's, but it can transfer and save RAW without problem.

I use a Vosonic X's Drive, works very well.

I bought and use a Hyperdrive...it is as good as they say maybe even better! I love it! I took it on a trip to British Columbia and it easily held all my RAW files. It is very fast both downloading and uploading; it is very portable yet very well built...like a brick! IMHO it is the best for the price point. Here are its features

Backup from 18 types of memory cards, no computers required • World's Fastest 20MB/s Memory Card Backup Speed (Download 1GB in less than a minute) • Longest Battery Performance (100GB/battery) • Fastest USB Transfer Speed (28MB/s) • Support high capacity (160GB & beyond) multi-partitioned hard drive • 32-bit Verification System • Ultra compact, only 20mm thick • Large LCD screen for file browsing & operations • Aluminum casing • Built-in clock with copy timestamping

Give them a look...click here: http://www.hypershop.com/shop/

All the best

The Epson P-200 and P-4000 can store and display Pentax PEF Raw files including the K10D. However they won't display DNG Raw.

The later P-3000 and P-5000 models apparently do display both PEF and DNG Raw files.

The Epson display is generally regarded as the best around on a portable unit, I'm certainly very pleased with my P-2000. As I shoot PEF with my K10D, I don't have any issues about not being able to display DNG.

If you're not worried about being able to display your shots, then a simpler portable storage unit is cheaper.

I should have mentioned that the price point for the Hyperdrive beats the competition...$239 for a 60 GB unit ranging on up to $359 for the 160GB model.

I got mine when they also had a 40GB model for 240 dollars Canadian, free shipping and 2 free sets of batteries and a car battery plugin included(check to see what they are offering now because it has changed)

I couldn't have been happier with my purchase after a year I still feel the same way. There are other good backups out there but I doubt that you can find one as good for the dollars paid.

Cheers

DO any of the epson decives support SDHC?

THanks,Michael

I use a Wolverine FlashPac 7000 - Hard drive in a box. The 40GB model - It is designed to read flash cards of almost any design - supports SDHC too. It has an interlal Lithium-ion battery, comes with a power adapter, USB cable and a little belt pouch to carry it around (if you are a true geek)

I bought the 25 USD accessory pack which has a 12 volt adapter for the car - a 4AA adapater and a camera case that fits the *ist Ds perfectly, the K10D does not fit all that well but it does fit. When I carry the bag around it fits into the small of my back without having fight a cumbersome bag while capturing images.

Wolverine has several models from 20GB to 120GB - some that show images (mine does not) - some that are mp3 players etc.

I used mine extensively in Dec. 06 during my vactaion about 2500 images (*ist Ds RAW and T*shiba JPG's). Used about 21GB of disk - Burned DVD's directly off the Wolverine once I got home.
The company name is WolverineData - I just downloaded the latest firmware.

The P3000 and P5000 do, apparently they also work with DNG format as well as PEF.

P2000 and P4000 only support up to 2GB SD cards with the latest firmware Ver 2.51 (P2000) or Ver 04.51 (P4000). There are no updates (as yet) for SDHC.
