I have been wanting this lens for a long time. I found, what I think is a good deal, on Dell for $459. I am seriously considering making the purchase. Are there any accessories that I will need to purchase with the lens? I have never purchsed a lens from Dell, any experiences that anyone would like to share?

How would this lens be as a walk around lens when taking children to park? I would like to try a few bug and flower macro shots, but I don't think I would use it too often for that. Would love to be able to put it on the camera, but nothing local to me that has it in stock.

Currently carry ~

Canon Rebel XTI with kit lens & battery grip
Canon 28-135 IS USM
Canon 75-300 IS USM
Canon 580EX Speedlight

I am hoping that this lens will find a happy home in my camera bag. Any opinions on the price, or decision would be greatly appreciated. I think I am trying to make sure that I will not regret it, and that there isnt a better lens for just a few $$ more that I am overlooking.

P.S. -- Husband says Happy late Anniversary (November), Merry Christmas (he didn't know what to get) & Happy Valentines Day!!

Thank you,
Liz

Thank you so much for the samples of the different shots. What a difference they make!! So I will add the tubes to the shopping list, but Dell doesn't sell them, so will have to look elsewhere. Are the tubes compatible with most lenses? They suit the purpose of getting closer, correct? Not more magnification? Thank You.

The lens hood (ET-67).

You can test its suitability by walking around with your 28-135 or 75-300 set to 100 zoom and see if it suits you.

Can't ever go wrong with B&H.
Are the tubes compatible with most lenses?
Yes. Canon EF 12 II and EF 25 II can be used with any EF and EF-S mounts, older non-"II" versions cannot be used with EF-S. I don't think Kenko set will work with EF-S lenses without modifying the plastic inner baffle, but they may have an updated set that accomodate EF-S.

Not more magnification?
Closer focus = greater magnification. Extension tubes allow closer focusing.

Increased focal length = greater magnification. Extension tube do not affect focal length.

That is a good thought. When I take pictures of my son indoors, they are usually at about 100, maybe a little over, like 110-115. I am pretty sure that I can live with that length. The next warm(er) day we have I will have to go for a walk with it.

Thank you for your suggestions.

The only EF-S lens that I own is the kit lens, and i don't plan on purchasing any more, as I will not be in the rebel line forever. i will look into the kenko set. Thank You.

OK - I have a new question!!

I am looking into the kenko set, will probably get these too. What about the teleconverters? Are they compatible with this lens? Your replies are greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Thank you all for your help today. I think i will be making the purchase this week, and i will look for the tubes also. Guess I should look into twin lights now too, The list of stuff just seems to never end.

Hope to be able to post some pictures soon!!

"The USM model will work with Canon's 2x teleconverter by interposing a 12mm extension tube, allowing 2x magnification with lots of working distance."

One more thing, don't buy cheap UV filter, I have Canon glass UV filter (no coating), it did shift the focus a little bit. When you test the lens, don't use any filter.

Thank you for the info about the filter, I was told that before I mount it, to put a filter on it, since I will be so much closer to the subject than non macro lenses. Will test it naked, then protect it, what kind of filter should I look for? Just UV filter? polarizer? My shopping list is getting longer. ;)

Hoya multi-coated should be fine, the Pro1 is better. I got pollen on the filter several times. Before you buy the twin lite, get an off shoe cable for your 580EX and use LumiQuest softbox to diffuse the light, you can hold it with one hand (not easy). The accessories are twice more expensive than the lens, my list is not complete yet. :(

DONE -- DONE -- DONE--

I ORDERED THE LENS!! I WILL HAVE IT BY THIS TIME NEXT WEEK, AND I CAN'T WAIT. I AM SO EXCITED, I FEEL LIKE A LITTLE KID GOING TO THE CANDY SHOP WITH MONEY FROM THE TOOTH FAIRY.

I WILL BE LOOKING INTO THE OTHER ACCESSORIES, AND FLASH OPTIONS. I THINK FOR RIGHT NOW, I WILL TRY TO GET AQUAINTED WITH THE NEW LENS. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP.
