I have noticed that there are white specs like flakes sprinkled in several of my shots...for example in people's hair or clothing...I am thinking this may be camera noise or ??? This is my second G2 and I notice it with both. Some shots are clean but others have this. I can take it out in editing. Anyone have this experience too? Thanks.

It sounds like jpeg artifacts. They may not show up when viewed at full size. Post a picture if you want to give us a better chance of informing you.

I wonder if it is not related to sharpening. At least I get this (which looks exactly like the effect of additional sharpening) effect quite often even without sharpening particularly on hair - the good news is that I think this is due to the quality of my PC screen since it doesnt show up on the print and often disappears if you zoom in on the image in Photoshop.

Just a thought. Posting an example would be helpful

My take on this is that the internal flash may have been responsible. Those built-in flashes really hgihlight any dust motes and create the funny white specks with these "close-focusing" digital cameras. Anyone else agree?

Cheers, Ron.

I did a search on white specks and found plenty of hits, but
nothing definitive. It seems like a lot of people are in denial,
while others see it and offer bogus explanations.

Is there a definitive explanation for this phenomenon?

I know what you're talking about. I've seen this in shots from some Fuji cameras.

However, the white spots appear in daylight shots from the G2 too.

It's not a big deal. In fact, I think it's less objectionable than the other forms of noise that appear in shots from other cameras. However, it is an unusual thing that this characteristic of the G2 and I'm curious to know what causes it.

If you apply sharpening using a program like IrfanView, you start to get... white spots! Maybe what you're seeing is an artifact of the in-camera sharpening? If you set lower sharpening does it go away?

So far no one has posted a sample of what they mean by "white specks
or spots". Workflow and EXIF would help too. GKL

It's possible that the in-camera sharpening is exacerbating this.
I haven't seen a systematic comparison of different sharpening
levels on the white spots.

It's kind of funny that you need to ask since it's a salient characteristic of so many G2 photos. I wonder if its one of those things that you need a good monitor to notice b/c I'm jut amazed by the number of people who claim not to notice it.

Do a search on "white specks" and you'll see plenty of examples of this phenomenon along with plenty of people either denying their existence or offering crazy explanations.

I don't think it is sharpening or jpeg artifacts...I found the white spots in a picture of reflections in a stream using RAW mode using 1/60 shutter speed and close to wide open aperture on the part of this picture with reflections, none are apparent in the bottom half, where less intense to no reflection. I suspect it is either reflection or stationery points where water is running over them during the relatively slow exposure.
