Where are they?
Both B&H and Adorama are out of stock

Not sure about Adorama, which I have done business with, but if B & H is out of a camera it is no more than a week usually less that it is back in stock. This is not true for lenses, but it seems to be for camera bodies.

In the past few weeks I've seen D40's everywhere - Best Buy, a small local camera shop, large local pro specialty shop.

(body only) is out of stock as well in both shops. Popular items. Sure the next shipment is on the way.

I think that a D40 is cheap enough.

Any cheaper and it will be classified as a throw away camera.

But I wont go down that road.
 
Nikon seems to be very conservative when it comes to estimating new product demand. Probably good business up to a point. I think it is a little ridiculous that people are still waiting for 18-200vrs.
