G7 - separating setting focus from exposure

exposure is now locked. Recompose, shoot!
faster, because you stay in AF for the next shot:

Point for exposure, press * (exposure is locked)
Point for focus, half-press (focus is locked)
recompose, full-press

What is not documented (at least not in the manuals for the S70 and Pro1) is that pressing the MF button locks the focus to the distance you last focussed on (via half-press). The manuals say you should half-press and at the same time engage MF - depending on the button layout this varies between 'fiddly' and 'almost impossible'.

In fact, you can half-press and then (ie after releasing) press MF to get the same result - much easier. Made a big difference to my shooting when I learnt this. I expect its the same on the G7.

Roy - I meant the suggestions made earlier in this thread. Wondered if the Star button reacted differently when an external flash is affixed. I'll try the recommendations with and without to see what happens!

The star key will lock exposure, flash or not. With flash, it does a Flash Exposure Lock (FEL) operation, i.e. issues a pre-flash to do expsoure evaluation and locks it.

Hi Roger

Very interesting and works well, I will add this to my website, thanks.

How is it going with the flash, what do you think of the Sunpak 44?

Best
