The KM 28-75/2.8 is highly recommended in that range or, in addition to the kit lense, get a 70-210/4 aka (also known as) beercan:

KM 5 D + some fine lenses

Some of the big dawgs recommended this lens to me, Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC IF Macro.
I love it !!!!!
Great price too.

If you don't mind changing lenses, I'd buy some primes

50mm 1.7
135mm 2.8 (I prefer the 100mm 2.0) but it's not cheap...

and:

17-35 2.8-4 (D)
28-135mm 4-4.5
70-210mm 4

Al great lenses and reasonable cheap.

Good luck!

I use: A100 - 17-35 2.8-4.0 D - 28 2.8 - 50 1.4 - 50 1.7 - 28-135 4-4.5 - 50 2.8Macro - 100 2.0 - 100 2.8Macro - 135 2.8 - 70-210 4 75-300 4.5-5.6 - 500 Reflex 8 - Sigma 135-500 4.5-5.6 -

Let's show the world there's more than Canon and Nikon!!

I'm very new to the dslr ranks, and was looking for a solution to my R1 low light focus, and also for the rather short 120mm lens. Soi I bought a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and a Sigma 70-210mm f2.8 and I have on order a Sony 50mm f1.4. I have the R1 for wide angle shots with a great lens...

I can definitely vouch for both of the Sigma's a being very quick in low light, very accurate. But the cost a lot, but not as much as the Sony's or Zeiss.

Eg. 70-210

Eg 24-70

I cary the Kit lens (18-70) but the lens that gets the most workout is the Tamron 28-200.
Followed by the Kit lens.
Followed by the 'Beercan' 70-210

I had the 18-70 and 75-300 kit lens.. they are good from my standard (newbie from the world of DC).

but I am thinking the new tarmon 18-250mm for travelling

then 50mm/f1.4 prime

The new Tamron 18-250mm will be hard to beat as a combination for travelling - don't underestimate the problems caused by trying to carry around a bag full of lenses & changing them while on holiday.

If you are looking for cheap lenses then the Minolta 35-105mm old style lens is hard to beat for good value. It is well made & is sharp & has a manual macro mode. This combined with the kit lens for covering the wider angles is not a bad combination.

Only if you want to shoot wildlife or small architectural detail do you want 300mm & upwards.

I find the 18-70 abet on the soft in corners,
for landscapes I think there is something better.

A minolta 50mm is good for scenics if you can find open spaces. It resolves detail into the distance very well.I Didn't try the 1.7 on the a100 yet, just the 1.4, but both should be excellent. The kit lens has a good focal range, but it doesnt resolve fine detail like grass, leaves etc, like a prime can.

I'm not sure that I understand your reply. The lens mentioned is 52.5-157.5mm 35mm 'Equivalent' & is quite good for building & landscape shots . Are you looking for a higher quality wide angle zoom ?

Some claim that the new Tamron 17-50 & 17-70 lenses & Sigma 10-20mm are good but I have no personal experience with them.

Keith-C

I have 2 kit ones: 18-70 & 75-300,
fixed lens: Sony 1.4/50,

and planning to buy 2 more:

Tamron 17-50 F2.8
Sony Zeiss 16-80 F3.5-4.5
