I am looking for a good (PC) program that can create VCD and/or DVD slideshows. I have tried a few different programs and not been happy with any of them due to player compatibility, reliability, image quality, or poor UI. Does anyone have any experience that they can share with me?

Proshow Gold....

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming - ' Wow! What a ride!'

I wish I would have known about this a year ago... I made an 8 minute slide show for someone That had Over 200 photos if I recall correctly entirely in Sony Vegas (video editing program) It took me almost 2 days!

Read here more often. There have been a number of threads on slideshow programs. I like to use Microsoft Photostory3 (free!) to generate the slide show video file (don't use NTSC template. Output to 1024x768), then use Sony Vegas to create a proper WMV file or output to DVD Architect or Pinnacle Studio10.

It interfaces well with Photoshop Elements. It is easy to assemble the slideshow in Photoshop and send to Premeire.

You add the menu screen and burn your DVD.

Very easy and very high quality.

You can also select widescreen or 'normal' TV before you burn your DVD.

This is an amazingly good program for a good price. Version 3.0 was just released and i just used it for a slideshow. I've used ProShow Gold for 3 years, and they have continued to improve it in terms of performance and features. The latest release allows layering of images and/or video clips in single frames for multiple images per frame with independent motion effects for each layer, as well making such things as cross-fading music very easy. Many other very nice features like direct linking to your choice of photo and music editing programs (like CS2, Audacity, etc.) if you need more than the built in editing features (which are great by the way). When you buy, you also get a year of updates for free. Highly recommended.

This is how I share about 99% of all my photos. I very seldom print photos; I put them into photo shows on DVD. I have used the trial version of ProShow Producer and own Roxio Videowave, and Adobe Premiere Elements 1.0 (in the package of Photoshop Elements 3.0 and Premiere Elements). I have also tried almost all of the other major programs that offer free trials.

I found that the ProShow Producer was an excellent product, easy to use and the output was superior to most of the other programs of this type that I tried. I also tired the Gold version and found it to also be a good program. If I remember correctly the output of the Producer was superior to the output of the Gold version, but the price of the Producer version was about $500- way too rich for me.

I found Roxio almost useless, but maybe I just didn't put in enough time to learn it better, but if it was written better I should have been able to learn the basics without much effort.

I have and use the Photoshop/Premiere Elements combination most of the time. It was not as easy to use as Proshow, but the output was as good, and that is what I was after. I have no desire to use a 10mp camera to produce very sharp photos and have the output on TV look like I shot them with a 2 mp camera. I know, they still are not as clear as a photo or even as good as looking at the photos on a monitor prior to encription for use on a dvd, but some of these programes were just plain awful. I must warn you though, Photoshop Elements has a slide show program that is included with it, it's output is not very good, but it is easier to use than Premiere Elements.

I would give Proshow Gold 3.0 a look. There are many slide show apps out there, including freeware, but ProShow has a much richer feature set than any I've used. It's also very easy to learn.

I'm just wading into DVDit 6, which looks to be more of a high-end product. It can do sound tracks and copy protection. It looks promosing so far. It looks a bit like video editing software. I tried Roxio's base product and it was too limiting. (Roxio bought out Sonic which makes DVDit).

Cheers,

I used a free issue programme from ULead for a year or so (I think it was VideoStudio 8) and found it to be perfectly ok.

Looking for something better I tried Pro Show Gold. I found it really easy to use and thought it beat ULead by a whisker. When I got a free upgrade to Pro Show Gold 3.0 it blew me away - now it's miles better than anything I've tried. If I had the money I would get Pro Show Producer but to be honest PSG 3.0 satisfies my needs and skill for now :)

Given the new additional features it brings, it is the premier slide show product on the market. Just glad I got the free upgrade from 2.6.

As it now supports WMA, Flash, and HD video output as well as incredible flexibility with caption and image motion/layering, it has everything I could ever want in a slide show product.

regards,
AH.
