Hey maybe I am super sceptical..but really...if the boot fits....

I'll concede your point, IF (and that's a big if) this turns out to be the first in a long line of AF-less bodies from Nikon; if the D80 and D200 replacements have no in-body AF, then you are right on. But I doubt that that will be the case...

Nikon is reaching out to a new audience, with the D40, one for whom the backward compatability issue is insignificant: i.e., they don't own any old lenses, and don't foresee needing a stable of lenses (because, really, who buys a dSLR and then suddenly wants to own a bunch of lenses?)
