Zoomed head gives notchy cutoff

If you "overzoom" a speedlight, so that you can see the edge of the beam you see that in general, at close distances it's quite sharp and not natural. On the other hand, a snoot or a grid give much softer edges to the beam, even when the angle of the beam is quite narrow, as you will get with using a thicker or finer grid.

The Speed Grid slideshow really illustrates the quality of the light well.
