Just got my s800 and have a couple of questions:

1. I run Windows 2000 Professional and installed the s800 driver which came with the printer. Initially I noticed that everything was OK - I could access print mode: Camera, DTP, SuperPhoto, etc. However recently I have noticed that my Printer properties dialog box looks completely different from the one shown in the s800 manuals - I no longer get the option to select the print modes!!! I've tried to uninstall the driver and re-install it, but to no avail. Anyone else have this problem or know how I can get it to operate/look in the manner mentioned in the manual?

2. I used the Canon Photo Paper Pro (6x4 inch version). The photos came out great. I switched to Kodak Premium High Gloss paper (A4 size) and the same photo came out looking very patchy/pixelated. Does changing the paper type make THAT much of a difference?!?!

Glut, are you saying that your properties box spontaniously changed? Did you upgrade any other software at the time of the change? Cheapbastid and other 2000 users report that they get the same box as your new one.

Paper can make ALL the difference. Different papers have coatings that take ink in different ways. Usually you can find a printer setting that will produce acceptable results, but not always. See the "printer settings" thread by "Dave".

Thanks for the feedback.

When I installed the driver for the first time, I definately noticed the different icons appearing for Camera, SuperPhoto, Normal, etc. In addition I also had a wizard button (which was documented in the manual for NT/2000 users). I was also very careful not to allow the W2K 'New Hardware Detected' dialog to activate by making sure the printer was switched off whilst installing the printer dirver - I even selected the port manually. Now, I'm not sure if by rebooting the Microsoft Hardware detection noticed a new hardware attached to the USB port and updated the driver with Microsofts copy. From what you say however, it appears others have always never seen the image mode icons under W2K

Glut, I am continually amazed at the things computers do seemingly without human intervention. When you reinstalled the driver did you first remove the s800 from your system using the device manager in control panel? If not you may want to try that. It might get the original driver back at least temporarily. I would also call Canon tech support.

Ed,

I removed the S800 using the Uninstall Software setting under Control Panel, rebooted and started what I believed to be a clean installation. However, having worked with Microsoft tools over the years I've got accustomed to not to take anything for granted.

Oh, well I'll just have to set the properties manually.

I've installed the S800 drivers on two computers I use...one with WIN 98se and the other WIN2000 Professional. Each has a different look to the properties dialog boxes. In fact, the WIN 2000 dialog box has fewer selections than the WIN98se.

Glut, It has been my experience that you can't get rid of a driver with "uninstall programs" although I note that BJ printer driver is listed. If you uninstall there does the s800 disappear from "system> device manager"? If not there is still a driver on the computer. Are you using parallel or USB?

Ed, I'm using the USB port - I've still got my old HP LaserJet 4L on the 'llel port

The readme.txt file for the W2K driver states that if the printer folder under settings has a printer icon with the words Canon Bubble-Jet BJxxx then you know its a Microsoft driver. Mine has Canon s800 so I assume it's still the Canon one I'm using - but who knows for sure

Sounds like you have the same issue I've seen. There is a different driver for XP and I believe it is the same as the Win 2K. The properties box is not the same, however my prints are just fine. And, yea, windows does what it wants, especially when it comes to USB ports...

As far as the paper, I bought 50 sheets of Kodak Ultima on sale. The prints looked very inferior to the Canon PPP. I tried a number of different settings. As far as the Kodak compatibility guarantee - forget it! I was on hold for over a half an hour and e-mails only bring auto responses. We'll get back to you in a week or two - forget it Kodak, there are too many other good papers...

Glut, I've been interested in this thread because I plan to convert the computer I use for printing to Win2000.

I pulled the Win2000 user guide off my s800 CD and the driver you are using is the one described and pictured in the guide. So what is really odd is how you saw the Win98 driver initially.

TomG,

It looks like paper does make a difference then. However, I read on another thread on printers + papers that someone managed to get 'excellent' results using the Kodak premium High Gloss and the S800. I cannot recreate it for some reason using PhotoRecord. The poster suggested using a different set of settings than what kodak recommended: ie. Standard print mode, Plain paper, Image/Photo Optimizer on and High Quality prints...

Did you give this a go?

Hi glut. I haven't managed to get good prints on Kodak paper from the S800 yet using any setting, although 'plain paper' seems to give best results.

I can go from blotchy, pixelated, unaceptable to Wow by changing from Kodak to CanonPPP. I haven't had the printer very long though and I'm still experimenting.

The paper I used was Kodak Ultima. I have seen others try Kodak's recomendations with reported unsatisfactory results. They [Kodak] finally replied to my E-Mail concerning the compatibility guarantee - it was to download and try their software.

As I said, there are too many other papers that give good results with the S800. Why should I burn BTUs to make the Kodak papers work. I get excellant printouts with Canon's PPP, and very good with some Epson papers and Office Depot PPP.

TomG,

Which paper other than Canon's do you find the best alternative. You mentioned Epson - which one in particular? I've not come across the Office Depot PPP in London. All I can find are HP, Epson and Kodak (plus some other unbranded papers).

Thanks

I have Windows XP and the menu is different than ME or 98. After achieving great results using Kodak PPP under ME after I installed XP my photos were awful - blotchy - color off. I couldn't find the correct settings in XP until I read another thread on this forum that explained to select "custom" which gives you access to the slider and other controls. Once I adjusted the slider to all the way right and selected plain paper I was back to getting the results I had been getting before. I created a profile and my prints have been great ever since. I think the blotchiness etc. is caused from not having the slider all the way right. I've never tried the Ultima so I can't comment on that.

Sue W,

I've tried using the custom setting with the slider setting to the far right as you mention, but I still don't get the same caulity image as in Canon PPP. However, I'm going to try setting the paper type to plain and see if that makes any difference. Currently I notice that areas in shadow (e.g. under the chin of a person) come out very patchy with Kodak

Sue, I am looking at upgrading from 98Se to the XP. Have you found that other programs and hardware required a lot of fussing? I'm not sure that I want to go through all of that. Thanks. Joseph

No not a lot of fussing. I did a clean install not an upgrade so I did have to reinstall the programs that I regularly use. I did quite a bit of research before I installed XP and it seemed that a clean install was the way to go It probably was a little more time consuming but worth it I think.

I needed to download a couple of updated drivers, the S800 for one, other than that I didn't have any problem and can't believe the increase in speed - boot time, everything- There are some programs that don't work with XP - early editions of Easy CD Creator and the Nero CD burning program are pretty problematic I understand.

I'm a happy XP camper and it is way way more stable than my 98 or ME ever thought of being!

Thank you Sue, you've almost sold me. I will have to check on a couple of programs and hardware I suppose, and take it from there. Appreciate your reply. Joseph
