Alkaline Battery life in the E-20! I am amazed!!!!

Hi Bram

2 points

1. you won't get anything out of alkalines on an E10 - ten shots if
you're lucky

2. I only use 1600 nimh - and I regularly got 150-200 shots out of
a set of batteries. I don't think 1400 is enough for it - really
That may be it---before I understood and looked for the different batteries, I had 1200 and 1300. As I remember, that was disappointing, but I don't remember exactly how many. Now I use the old ones in the flash or give them to David to use in the old P & S digicam.

Bram if I may add to things you can check for....

1/ Use a NiMH charger, not NiCD.

2/ Do you have Smartmedia and Compact flash loaded simultaneously? both together use more power.
3/ Temperature, cold kills batteries.
4/ Age, how old are the batteries?

5/ Try doing a complete discharge before charging, I use a flashlight to completely run the cells down before a charge.
6/ Which firmware are you running? Perhaps an update would improve things?

And all the other things listing in the other messages are valid too.

Believe it or not I took 304 photo's with Alkaline Batteries.
This just blew me away. I think this is good information to know
esp if someone forgets their extra set of NiMH, Battery pack, or
lipo grip and gets in a pinch.

Has anyone done a test for maxthe NiMh batteries?
That's INCREDIBLE! I have to try that too! Last night I was out
with a freshly charged set of 1400NiMH (fully used a couple of
times before so they should be on the top of their life) and they
died after 19 shots! I couldn't even get the 20th shot. Granted,
it was cold, but certainly not freezing! And no LCD usage, no
(p)review, no flash, even IR assist disabled. Most shots MF. I was
so disappointed. I guess I'll have to switch to Alkalines now.

I'm sorry to say this but I'm starting to dislike my E-10. Perhaps
in a
studio it's a good camera, but for versatile outdoor use the machine
just keeps disappointing me in many ways. I should have bought the
C4040 or the Canon G2. Much cheaper, much more reliable. 19 shots
on a set of 1400NiMHs is worse than a D7 on a bad day.

Bram, who is glad he's kept his 2020 as a backup

Bram, I previously owned and E-10 and if you shoot in cold weather
then yes you may have some difficulty with NiMh batteries.
Alkaline life will be shortened also. What you might do is get a
Li-Ion battery pack from Thomas distributing. This is what I used
prior to getting my Lipo Grip. The Li-Ion Battery pack can be
found at Thomas Distributing for about $59 and will work in cold
weather better. There are also other battery packs on the market
that I am sure other users here can suggest.

I too was noticing how fast the Nimh's died in the cold. Took the 6volt battery from my mountain bike lighting system, got a coiled cord & the correct size connector from Radio Shack soldered it on and good to go. Toss it in my camera bag, plug it in and with a 5Ah runtime it goes all day.

Obviously they do not like me there so I was asked by a
poster how many shots can I get either on Alkaline batteries or
NiMH batteries in my E-20.
It saddens me to see that you misinterpret my interest in the E-20 Jason. All I wanted to know was how bad the D7 was in power-consumption terms compared to a camera where battery life obviously is no issue. I would love to own an E-20 as well but they retail at around $2250 here in Norway.

cheers,

I always keep a spare set of alkaline batteries in my pocket "just in case". On those more than too many occasions where my NiMH batteries have died mid shoot and I've had to switch over to the alkalines, I've had great success. I've, easily, shot 250 - 275 pics from one set. And, I'm not even using the expensive alkalines.

Meanwhile...my students inadvertently loaded our school's E-10 with the batteries that came with the camera. Less than 30 minutes and 12 shots later, these things were toast.

I'm beginning to think our little E-10s all have different appetites for different battery types.

Have a great night!

If I have misinterpreted your intention and and interest in the E-20 Thordur that I sincerely and Humbly appoligize. You really cannot blame me for being a little sensative in the Minolta Forum esp with the hostile reception I received there the last few days when I posted my opinion in regard to the D7, E-10, Nikon comparison question. I will note your interest and try to respond in kind. I really Thankyou for asking this question because it has provided information for me and others that we might not have explored in regard to Alkaline batteries. I have never used them in the past because I always believed that the NiMh would outlast them. Its clear now, at least to me that in regard to the E-20 model they will work well in an emergency if I need them. Once again thanks.

Bram, That is strange. I got over a hundred shots on a set of NiMh batteries with my E10. Perhaps, there is a problem with your camera. Leon

Buy or borrow a cheepo voltmetre and check your batteries after
charging - you may have a duff one.
hi there.. yeah.. I wish it was something like that, but I have quite
a bunch of sets (1100s, 1400z, 1600s, 1800s, all different brands)
which
perform very well in my other camera (Oly C2020) but consistently
fail to give me any satisfactory performance on the E-10. I've never
gotten more than 50 shots out of a set. And that's without flash and
LCD usage. I find this disappointing and a drawback for everyday
E10 use.
