I am new to studio photography .I recently purchased both an olympus e-10 and Novatron 600 kit

which includes 4 heads (two with flash capabilities.) I tried hooking up the sync wire from the power pack

to the E-10's flash synchro socket( External flash socket). The novatrons head did not flash ,in flash model setting.

Am i doing this right? is this dangerous to my camera circuits? should i use a remote slave? please clue me in, thanks

I had a problem with my studio flash system and my E20 in that it was only firing intermitaintly.

It was traced to the PC flash connection, I crimped the plug on the flash lead very slightly and gently pushed the centre pin off centre very slightly.
It now fires everytime.
PC sockets are rubbish.
Please take note of the 'gently' and 'slightly' parts of the above message.

I'm not sure what the one previous responder meant by "PC Sockets are rubbish", but I disagree. All conventional strobe lighting uses this universal connection and it is reliable.

Now, for your problem: If you have all items plugged in and you know your strobes are functioning properly (test with different camera, perhaps), then my next check would be simply the setting of the E10. Be sure that the socket hasn't been deactivated throught the firmware w/in the camera. If you have old PC connectors, then you may need to check that there is a tight fit, but if all is new, you shouldn't have to do this.
Good luck!

Jeff, Reverse the plug that goes into your powerpack. On occasion the polarity is reversed for the E10 and simply reversing this plug will get you going. Regards, Jim N'AZ

Jeff,

I had the some problem with a Balcar studio setup, call Olp and they advise me to change the polarity of the system. I am howerer using a quantum radio slave and is 100%, which is kind of weird because the PC conncection works like a champ with a MEtz and Nikon flashguns, and the camera on manual.

Jeff,

I dont know if you have found a fix for this yet... but; If you have 2 heads that dont flash then they are probably broke. I dont think I have ever heard of Novatron not being strobe lighting. Also, I use a Novatron lights and I have no problems using the pc sync cable with my E10. No matter how I connect it.

I suggest you see a Novatron repair person and have the system checked out.

My Speedotron rig worked perfectly wired, but when I tried to add a set of Wein wireless triggers, none of my cameras could fire it. It wasn't polarity, since reversing the plug made no difference, and the same wireless receiver worked 100% in my Quantum T2. I discovered quite by accident that it worked perfectly if I put my 20-foot sync cable between the powerpack and the receiver. I later purchased a Wein Safe-Sync connector, which solved the problem more compactly.
