pfiltz method+three glasses of wine=

A unique technique indeed. I'll give you my honest critique though.

You have too many blown highlights. Right side of her face and her hair. There is plenty of beautiful pixels here that have been clipped! I can tell you that the problem is not due to the pfiltz technique really as much as it is the way the original photograph was taken. You can tell that by merely observing the midtones to shadows and especially the shadows (left side of face). This could have been avoided by providing more fill stright on so that you wouldn't have to over compensate the overall exposure.

All in all a great try. You can help us by telling us where and how you positioned your light source(s) (and also the type of wine that was administered)!

original -vs- the post one to be honest. If you open the org. file, dupe the layer, add soft light blend, create a mask, and brush in her face, arms, and anything else selectivly, you might even like it better.

It's all so subjective. One reason why I don't comment on too many shots posted by people. I know what I like, and usually have a pretty good feel as to what my customers may or may not like.

Phillip,

Thanks again for the email and the download.

I do have a question. I am somewhat versed on Photoshop, but I do not understand the step of brushing back in sections through a mask. ??? When I choose the brush from the tool pallet, it either does not do anything or gives me the color in the color pallets. ?? Do you mean erase through the mask (I only have luck using the eraser tool, which basically erases through the duped layer and lets the underlying layer come through the duped).

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Brian

no expert PS person by any stretch ;) Just a photographer, who has to use it to get what I want.

I've always used the brush to bring in details that I want. One thing you have to have though, is to make sure the foreground color is BLACK. If memory serves me, if it's white, nothing happens.

I'm not up to speed on all the in's and out's of PS. All I really know is what version I'm running ;) which is CS2.

A layer mask when filled with black will hide the effect. In this case you want to use a brush with white to paint in the effect.

A layer mask when filled with white will reveal the effect. In this case you want to use a brush with black to remove the effect.

Just remember: black conceals, white reveals

Beautiful subject!

I have to ask... What happened with her right arm? Between her wrist and elbow I see something odd. Was it subject movement on her side or overuse of the cloning tool? Also the thumb and finger appear to be in an awkward position.. or am I just seeing too much?

Thanks,

John

Isn't it obvious? He was getting double vision from too much wine. :-)

Nice shot and beautiful model. I prefer your original shot, including the crop that flatters the curves of the model. In my personal (and of course) subjective opinion, the colors of your processed version are oversaturated and distracting to me.

Best wishes,

Chef,

Hey, thanks for "the jump in and help!" "now that is service".
I just printed off your tutorial and plan on reading it tonight.

I have somewhat of a handle on layers but am still struggling with masks to some degree.

I am sure that many others here will be printing it off as well.

Thanks again.
Will report back later.

Brian
