Maybe not the best value for $599...

Although I commend Nikon for creating a decent camera in the D40, the Pentax K110D is going to give it a run for the money. Since most first timers with DSLR's don't have a large investment in lenses, the Pentax offering is a better perceived value. And remember, Pentax is always back lens AF compatible, and the new Nikon has been stripped of that feature. Not to mention 9 cross point AF sensors in a group of 11.

You'd buy Nikon if you want to wear the brand name around your neck in this case. Otherwise, Pentax continues their double punch direclty at Nikon with the K110D and the newer K10D.

As a D200 owner, I love the fact that there is more aggression in the marketplace right now. Who's left out? Canon of course. They changed the DSLR world with the original Rebel. Now, there is nothing to compete with the D40 and the Pentax K110D in their lineup.
