Hi!

I have one question, why dosent all digital kameras have 28 mm lens? Is it more expensive and harder to make them? I mean if you want 35 mm its just to use the zoom or?

I'am sorry if this is a stupid question but I would like to know...
I have the f30 and I'am more than happy with it but I miss the wideangel...

If a camera company sells a camera with say a 4X lens, then if it starts at 28 it will end at 112. I agree with you, I like wide angle very much but dont consider 28 all that wide, (wide is 15-18) but my guess is that marketing types are really trying to offer longer lenses. The bigger bridge cams and a few compacts are in the 10X - 12X range, most are 35-350 or 36-420 or something like that. Only a few have attempted to include the wider angle in that range. Wide angle is tougher to make, especially tough to make a good quality wide angle. Add to that the desire to get a lot of range and it becomes nearly impossible to get good wide angle. If you look at the best DSLR or SLR wide angle lenses they usually are VERY limited in range (12-24, 10-20) which is 2X. I doubt too many P&S cameramakers are looking at selling a 8 megapixel P&S with a 18-35 range lens.

Take some of those Panasonic superzoom cams, at 12X if they started at 18 they would end at 216, wouldnt even be categorized a superzoom then, although it might be a fun cam anyways.

Yes, it is more expensive to make. And usually, even the existing 28mm don't do it right - they often have blurry corners.

Unfortunately, the f series is already sadly lacking when it comes to flare. It's too easy to fog the shot when the lighting is coming from a bad direction.

Also, I think the conumer is to blame, foks that dont know photography assume that the zoom lens is sexier then the wide angle. They play with the cams in the store and oooohhh la la................look how far I can see!

IMO, wide angle is far more usefull for overall photography then the zoom! An all around compact lens should really start about 28mm and go to 110 or as high as cost and function will allow...........then a company can make another model if they want of say 50mm to 350mm (all 35mm equivilant)

I am sure its cheaper to give us a cleaner 36mm to 110 then to have to push it to 28mm. But there is alot to be said for a good 28mm and to make it a faster lenses then Fuji is used to putting out. I would like to see both but that is a model I probably wouldnt upgrade out of for quite some time, because it would be rare..............exactly why Fuji should make it, gain more market share, name recognition. (a faster/wider lens would be heavier but I am up for that)

Could you imagine an F33, that is 28mm to 120 with F2.8 on wide and 3.5 on full zoom...........with manual controls and maybe a few other things added, like less pf and less blown highlights................like the Cajun cook says; "oh yea babe"..........that would be such a keeper!

Just look at the price difference between various lens adaptors like Raynox and Olympus between the tele and wide angle lens, my WCON-08 costed almost twice what my TCON did.

The 28 mm wide angle is one of the things I really like about the S6500fd.

However, the reality is that consumers do value longer zoom. They want to be able to take pix of their kids on a football field or a distant stage at a school concert. I can understand the commercial aspects of camera design that influence the manufacturer's thinking.

Personally, I think Fuji has it about right. Any wider than 28mm and you start to get more image distorion than the average punter will want (except for special effects). Any longer than 300mm and the average punter will have difficulty keeping the camera steady enough for clear shots.

I read somewhere that the lenses are mass produced as modules and not made by the various manufaturers.

If true this may explain why they all seem to be so similar

Hi,

I owned the Canon SD 800 IS for a week and returned it. It has a 28-105 mm (3,7x) zoom lens, but with severe soft corners. So that is the problem: 28 mm in a compact camera is very difficult (and more expensive) to construct, even for Canon! So now I have the F30 and am very content with it. Very sharp lense (although 36-108 mm) and after some time of mastering I know it as my trouser pocket...

I disagree. Canon is simply being cheap by making too small a lens for the sensor. If you check their other S models which start at the generic 35mm or so, you'll find blurry corners as well. Canon is notorious for ripping off their customers when it comes to the corners with their compact models. If you want to see how it should be done, check out Panasonic where their brochures proudly announce the sharpness of the corners because they did not cheap out on optics.

This rationale doesn't make sense. If the Canon was a little blurry in the corners at 28mm, you could crop them out and still have a much wider field of view than the very average 36mm.

Greetings. Yes, the 28mm focal length is available in the new Fujifilm S9100. The zoom on that "bridge" digital camera goes from 28mm to 300mm (35mm equivalent), and is quite sharp, with very little distortion or chromatic aberration. For sample images, please check out my site in signature...the top 3, middle right and bottom right-hand images were all shot with the S9100, and I'm pleased with the overall image quality! It compares favorably with the sharpness of the Zeiss lens on the Sony F828.
