Hi there

I rang my dealer today - I was first on the list for a black one . . . . . but he only got chrome :-( Maybe next time (hopefully a couple of weeks away).

It's been a busy week - Basildon on Monday and Tuesday, Warrington on Wednesday and Thursday, back home today. Yesterday morning was frosty and bright so I took a quick walk near Halifax before heading to the industrial estate.

Today I took the dog out for a couple of hours.

The R-D1 came with me - It's a splendid camera - all my fears about going back to manual focus have been just the opposite - I get less incorrectly focused shots than I ever did with auto focus cameras - no camera shake, even at stupidly slow shutter speeds - no CA, it's really a joy.

Anyway, here is a link to the shots - taken with a variety of lenses, but mostly with:
50mm f2 summicron
28mm f1.9 CV ultron

I'll put a few favorites in the next post for those too busy (or with a dialup)

Enjoy!

kind regards

Half of the UK could have an M8 before the black ones arrive ;-0 .. It's quite ridiculous that they make you choose on laying a deposit!. they should offer whatever arrives to the first person on the list and give you the option to accept what they have or wait for the colour you want!..

Lovely weather and lovely shots !! - you'd not think of that as "Essex" - more like up here or in yorkshire

Hi there - here are a few samples for those in a hurry:

Incidentally - I met a guy whilst taking one of these shots, he watched me for a minute perplexed, and said "But you're shooting into the sun". I'd forgotten, it was the first rule my father gave me with my first camera: "Never shoot into the sun"!

These were taken in the Shibden Mill valley near halifax

CV 28mm 1.9 ultron:

These were taken in our home:
Leica 50mm cron

And these were taken in our local nature reserve:

CV 28mm ultron

Leica 50mm cron:

90mm 2.8 elmarit

50mm cron

CV 15mm

finally, the photographer and his assistant (50mm cron I think - I asked Blue, but he didn't remember either)

Hi Adam

the first page are in Yorkshire (Halifax) the rest are in Suffolk (on the Norfolk border). Mind you, Quentin lives in North Essex, and it's very beautiful . . . . .

Jono,

The last time I saw one of your posts it was on the Kodak SLR site. I seem to remember a defection to Canon. Now here you are in rangefinders.

The R-D1 is really a great little camera, isn't it? Maybe it's primarlly the glass, but the meter is almost always dead on. We'll find out how much is glass and how much is camera when we gety our M8's. Can't wait. Good seeing you in action.

Hi Dan

Never went to Canon - my 14nx went to fund a D2x. (your memory is obviously like mine :-p

I'd never used rangefinders before, the nearest I ever got was a Contax G1, which (in retrospect) had all the disadvantages of rangefinders and slrs (despite lovely lenses).

Anyway, I've definitely fallen in love, and can't wait for the M8 - certainly it's my most anticipated camera for a long long time.

But in the meantime, the R-D1 is magic - and it seems to be capable of prints far bigger than one might imagine.

thanks for looking

kind regards

Hi There

I think I've been lucky with my R-D1 - the box was a bit battered, and the camera had a couple of marks on it (new was obviously relative) but the rangefinder and focusing all seems fine.

It's really a lovely camera - I hope your R-D1s behaves as well.

kind regards
Great shots. Wish I could achieve such with my new R-D1s

Hi Jono,

I would rather say, your R-D1 have been lucky with you ;-) What do you need the M8 for??? You have certainly made an intelligent first step into the rangefinder world with the R-D1. I have the feeling, you have inspired so many fellows here, Epson should give you a free camera. Feel fre to forward my mail ;-)

I have found (after looking) a used one here in Germany, we are negotiating the price.

Take care

Dear Jonathan,

thank so much for sharing these lovely pictures with me. They make me feel quite home-sick! I now live in Hong Kong but was born in the UK.
I had no idea the R-D1 existed until recently. What a gem!
Peter.

Well, one hears tales of dodgy QA, and mine does seem to be okay.

It's the wide angle - I've taken a few shots, but the combination of vignetting and the crop factor is relevant - also it's the resolution for landscape work - the R-D1 is remarkably good - much better than it's lowly 6mp would suggest, but still, the extra would be welcome.

Or Leica? ;-)

Well, I'd go for it - at the original £2000 it was a pricey bit of kit - but at current prices, I think it's a wonderful deal.
Take care
and you too.

Hi Peter

I'd love to go to Hong Kong - I just finished reading 'The honourable schoolboy' this morning.

I was aware of the R-D1, but never really gave it a thought (well, it was very expensive when it first appeared).

it's a lovely thing.

kind regards
