200-400 VR does not equal prime lens sharpness?

Re: Piscovery

All I know is that after I got the 200-400 VR, I permanently retired (read:sold) my Sigma 500mm f/4.5 (which is actually a darn good lens).

My experience has been that sharpness is still quite good with the TC14e wide-open. Although it is better stopped down to f/5.6, the difference is fairly minimal for my work. I don't own either of the other TCs, but I've heard time and time again that the 1.7x definitely needs one stop down, and the TC-20E needs at least two stops to get decent performance.

I'm sure there are some sharper lenses, but IMO we've reached the point of splitting hairs in some of these comparisons.

I really love the flexibility of the zoom this lens offers, and the VR option is really nice for monopod/sidekick work.
