200-400 VR does not equal prime lens sharpness?

I recently picked up a 200-400 VR reading that this lens is as sharp as any of the Nikon telephoto primes, such as the Nikon 300 f/2.8. While comparing the two, I found that my 300 f/2.8 AFS-I was still sharper even if I stopped down the 200-400 VR. I recently had my 300 calibrated at Nikon, but whatever they did, it is bar none, the sharpest telephoto I have ever shot with. Is my 200-400 VR flawed or do I have an extremely good sample of the 300 2.8? Can anybody confirm my test? If it is my 200-400 VR, I will definitely bring it into shop to get fixed. Any experience or opinions would be appreciated! Thanks!
