G7: noise levels with reduced resolution

The G7 looks like a very nice camera to me, and I am seriously considering getting one.

One of the nice advantages seem the 'useable' higher ISO values (200, 400, maybe 800).

One of the disadvantates is the noise level at higher ISO values, and the obvious NR.

What would the results look if you would not make the pictures with the G7 at max resolution, but would lower it (in camera) to approx. 6 MP or so? Thus, get around the 10MP noise problem, while retaining the sensitivity advantage.

What would the noise levels be if you used the G7 this way compared to 6 MP cameras (like S3 IS)?

I guess it depens on how DIGIC III handles the reduced resolution?
