Went to Benezette today and we saw roughly 57 different elk, many BIG bulls this year. The last one we saw near evening was one the locals call Fred. He's quite impressive.

Up close and personal.
Focal Length 417 mm

I noticed when i was processing this one that he was relieving himself LOL.

Here's Fred. Number36, they should call him Jerome :)

Beautiful captures. #2 is funny - I guess you can always use the spot remover tool for a "sanitized" version :-)

I guess they don't call it Elk County for nothing. Thanks for posting.

I hope they don't stumble into Virginia, because hunters are allowed to shoot them. Tennessee has stocked Elk as well and Virginia farmers don't want them because they are afraid of Chronic Wasting Disease spreading to the cattle so hunters are allowed to shoot elk without a license.

Photography is a journey, not a destination.

They've been here since 1913, i doubt they will ever leave. Here's a good site that tells their story.

Thanks Lenny for the comment. I didnt figure it would get much feedback though. They're not from Yellowstone or they dont have a cat or dog in them.......

All you have to do is tag it elk and I will look. I love elk and spend a fair amount of time with my local herd.
The one with the tag is a royal. Very rare!

Its funny Yellowstone has that mystique about it. Everyone loves Yellowstone (including me). However I have lots of local bulls that put Yellowstone’s bull to shame.
You post them here and no one seems to notice.

Oh well this is mostly a gear forum not a photography forum.

Side note for anyone reading this that hasn’t studied elk a lot. A royal is a mature bull who get more than six points on a side. Most bulls never go beyond being a 6 x 6.

Yes it is, and I certainly enjoy reading about gear (and, more important, how to use them effectively). I also enjoy the photos posted, and try to learn from them as well. I suspect many others do as well, but most may not post in response to a photo, because they do not know what to say.

The original post inspired me to look up elks on Wikipedia. Males shed their antlers end of every winter, and growth of the antlers are testosterone driven. The antlers can grow at a rate of an inch a day. I wonder where they get all that calcium from.

That capture with the two stags challenging each other is fantastic.

It's great to elk in PA. I am one of those dpreviewers that has been photographing elk in Yellowstone this fall and it is nice to see you enjoying the elk in the east. They are beautiful! I'd love to see a big old bull resting against a big old oak tree - something you will never see in Yellowstone - the oak tree, that is.

Great pics, love the color in the first one. Do you have more? Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the comments. I'll post a few more for you. They are HUGE animals but they're probably the tamest animals we have LOL.

My favorite shot.

Sepia.

Having a chew.

Wouldn't you like to live here?

Nothing like a good bugle :)

We usually have a few royals around here. Most of ours are 6x6 but last year i saw an 8x8 and i don't know about Fred. He had 17 points but i don't know if they all were long enough to count.

LOL yep.

Unless you can get a shot of a bull with a cat/dog or baby.....then you'd be in good shape.

That was a killer shot you posted, thanks for sharing it.

I would LOVE to see those in the wild! Nice shots you have there. Looks like they could be destructive that close to a house. One bump with that giant rack and the window could be gone! What part of PA were these taken?

Looks like you had better weather for your "elk hunt" than we had for our mountain trip.

Beautiful photos. I am not sure I like to see tags on any animals, It looks or reminds me of a hunting farm....
But still, beautiful photos and majestic animals.
Nice presentation.

Thanks Linda!

It was fairly cold and windy. It snowed, rained then the sun would come out etc. This is Benezette, Hicks Run, Dents Run area.

The cool thing is that its where they live and just so happens to be little towns. You can see them anywhere from peoples yards to fields. We stopped one place and a guy was playing frisbee in his backyard and there were 10 - 15 elk about 30 feet away just watching them LOL......

The herd is around 800 so your bound to see them. If you ever want to come over just let me know. Its about an hour and a half east of me. I'm going again this saturday if the weathers nice.

Rudi,

I love the first photo in the water, well done. I checked out your galleries, your pictures are excellent. I especially love the train photo where you included pp information, although, I was disappointed that the link did not work for me.

I looks like you are using a 30D for much of your work. What pp programs do you use? I am new to the 30D world (love the camera) and have just started shooting in RAW. I am using DPP and investigating other programs. I am curious what works well for you and your pp workflow.

Thanks!!

Accually very few are from the 30D, i just recently got it a couple months ago. Most of my shots are from the 300D. I shoot 99% jpeg and process with CS2. I mostly just adjust levels and sharpen except for the extreme processed pics that you can tell by looking at. I'm still having troubles adjusting to the 30D but its getting better. I really think it may force me to shoot RAW.

Thanks for checking my galleries out and the nice comments. I've learned everything i know from these forums. I've only been shooting for about 5 years, with the last 3 years seriously. I still have alot to learn.
