there isn't much in image quality between the 16-35 and 17-40, so you might want to get the 17-40 if you don't need the f/2.8. A good sample will provide you with usable corners even at f/5.6, but the corners will be definitely be supersharp at f/11. A 5D+17-40 also resolves more detail than a 30D+10-22. (probably due to its lower pixel density and higher pixel resolution). Petteri has a side by side comparison review on his website (don't have the link at hand, use google :P).

Sharp WA primes for the 5D are the 35mms, the L and the f/2.0 both have a good reputation and can be very, very sharp. Same goes for the 24-70L and 24-105L zooms at focal lengths below 50mm. I've also heard a lot of positive remarks about the Sigma 30/1.4.
