Hi,

Need some Pentax and camera shopping help for Singapore. I am located in KL and find it is still hard to look for various camera stuff. Will be visiting Singapore during the year end school holidays to visit relatives and do some shopping for Pentax lenses, the K10D (hopefully), a Manfrotto tripod/ballhead and Lowepro bag that holds 2 bodies + 4-5 lenses.

Would it be easy and worthwhile to shop for these items there? If names of shops are too troublesome, then names of shopping malls will do. I have lived and worked in Singapore previously and am familiar enough with the places there as well as using the superb MRT train network. So getting around is not much of an issue. Time is also not an issue.

Thanks ahead for any help.

Regards,
H Chan

Hi Chan,

Try Cathay Photo at Peninsula Plaza (www.cathayphoto.com.sg). I got some of my Pentax lenses there with good price. Good reputation too.

Good luck,

Winston

I have bought Pentax stuff at

Cathay Photo, Peninsula Plaza
Alan Photo at Sim Lim and at Funan Centre
MSColor at Ang Mo Kio (walking distance from the Underground station)
Parisilk at Holland Village

Not much difference between prices except that Cathay slightly higher than the others. Worth phoning ahead and seeing what they stock and at what price.

For items not stocked, I have bought from B&H in New York - US prices are lower than Singapore generally. The main problem here, as in so many other places, is the narrow range of lenses imported by the agents. In fact the Siingapore agents have changed recently from Jebson & Jesson (who did nothing) to Shriro (too early to tell).

Thanks everyone for the tips. I now have a focus list to work on.

Agree that Shriro since taking over Pentax distributorship has improved things. But it is still not easy to look for lenses and accessories off the counter. Took me over 2 months to get the FA 50mm f1.4. The only shop I found in Malaysia that had a decent range of Pentax lenses was as far north (in Penang) as is Singapore. I am sure Singapore has a lot more choices than Penang. Also, I heard that prices for Lowepro bags and perhaps Manfrotto tripods are cheaper there.

woodwind,

I just bought a Pentax DA 50-200mm for RM750 and the AF540FGZ flash for RM1250, in Penang. These prices were far cheaper than what I got quoted at Cathay in Singapore.

However I did buy a Lowepro from Singapore because, yes, bags are significantly cheaper there.

Chan,

Any experience with ShaShinKi ( ) in Malaysia? They don't have much Pentax equipement, but it seems to be an interesting alternative to ordering in the states (I'm located in Brunei).

Cheers,
