I looked at the various comparisons on PBase and am amazed that it
could even match a supposedely good prime for IQ. But it is rather
big compared to my usual primes.

And heavy. This is no lightweight lens so keep that in mind too,

I see it is a pound, which is about 3 1/2 to 4 times the weight of
a DA 21. The lens itself looks to be similar in size to the kit
lens but even then, you add a petal hood to it and it gets big and
ugly.

Yep, as far as short 'consumer' zooms it's right up there but it is faster:

Sigma 17-70 455g Diameter 79mm Length 82mm
Pentax 16-45 365g Diameter 72mm Length 92mm
Pentax 18-55 225g Diameter 68mm Length 67mm
Pentax 24-90 355g Diamtere 72mm Length 75mm

I agree with about the petal hoods. I am not keen on them when they get overly large. I bought a nice metal, round hood about 15mm deep for my FA20/2.8 and realised it is a perfect fit for my FA24-90 which keeps things quite compact and due to screw on studiness I can leave it in place 100% of the time. But 16mm or 17-18mm wide lenses though do need something like the petal hoods (somebody give me an alternative please!) I take the DA16-45 with me as well travelling and this needs the petal hood which is interchangeable with the FA24-90 hood so I carried on one. At least with the Sigma 17-70 I would no need to carry both these lenses -- maybe I will wait for the DA17-70 next year -- at least it has the name I have most confidence in

How is the AF on it? I have a Sigma 28-90 that is very fast. The
lens is not the sharpest tool in the shed but has color and
contrast at least as nice as the kit lens but has good bokeh.

The specs say that it has IF (internal focus) which the DA16-45 does NOT (and the FA24-90 does and I love IF) - IF should help smooth fast focus if it is well implemented and I note from photos the focus ring rotation is not large so focus speed should be good but I guess John can answer that best.
