I should have the dough to buy the Sony 707 very soon. Any tips on companies in the U.S. that ship to Canada that have a good reputation and price would be appreciated.

Any good companies in Canada that have a good price would be prefferable, but so far it looks like the U.S. companies have the camera for $2-300 dollars less after taking into account the Exchange rates.

The interesting thing is that the Sony Memory seems to be less expensive in Canada by the same amount, which doesn't make sense.

Please list and/or email me.

thanks,

Dale

Hi Dale- the lowest I've seen is $1599,- at cameracanada.com -however they're out of stock till Feb. What you could do is print the page and try to price match at any Future Shop. I wouldn't buy online from the U.S.; don't forget about customs & also Canadian warranty- especially with the 707's.
Hope this helps...........Good Luck 7OF7

Thank you, this is a great start.

Hi, Dale.

It really irks me that Sony rips off canadians. Other camera manufacturers face the same import duties and exchange rates as Sony does, but their prices are almost always on par or lower than the U.S. after exchange. As far as I have seen, Sony is the only digicam manufacturer whos prices are substantially higher.
That said, I think your best buy in canada right now is Future Shop at $1599

on sale. I had a "price watch" on their website and they sent me an e-mail a few days ago to say the price had just come down.

I'm really seriously looking at buying the G2 due to lower price, lower noise, better company, great quality. Although I LOVE the 707 lense, the vignetting and noise problems have me spooked.
Good Luck. Pete D.

One thing that I have noticed is that the Memory sticks are much cheaper from Canada, a 128MB Sony is $159 Cdn vs. the same or more U.S. in the USA. For Americans $159 Cdn is about $98 U.S. for a 128MB stick, yet the Sony camera's are less expensive in the U.S. using the same exchange rate.

Perhaps people from the states should order their memory from http://www.canadiancamera.com

Dale:

I would be careful in buying a Sony from the US since warranty issues would need to be deal with in the US. Sony Canada does not warranty items bought outside Canada. You may have read that the BFS was resolved with a firmware fix by Factory Service. I do not believe that a US camera would be fixed in Canada.

Suggestion:

1. Buy your Sony Dig. from a reputable American Store with US warranty

2. Consider to buy the extra warranty from the selling stores
this is a must as Sony charges $148 "flat rate" during the first year
of warranty service (this is my experience dealing with US Sony).
Though Sony's replacement parts are free (within warranty period).

Under the warranty, unlike US-Nikon, the US-Sony do not ship cameras to Canada. They will ask for your friend's address in US.

3. If you are buying the extra warranty service, make sure the shop put in writing that it will take care of all services. and understand you will send it from Canada.

4. If you are lucky/unlucky dealing with US-Sony services:

once your camera is in Sony's hand, and if you do not agree the flat fee, you will then pay a flat fee of about $35-$40 (I forgot the price) to get the camera back. That is called Sony Service.

Sony use a centralized service depo, you will not know where is your camera during the service, and will not be able to speak to a service personnel. And if the Service Depo call you, they will not tell you

his/her name (technician's name), they are all identified by a number like ABC1234.

I also found the Sony Service personnel very rude,
if you do not like their service, the service depo technician will xxx??yzzz
while the Sony sales desk was very nice to deal with. If you call the
service depo desk, the girls are very nice, but no clue what is the problem.

5. Unlike regular SLR, when it comes to digital equip., there is very little custom/ duty to be paid, so I do not expect to pay a high cost on custom / duties. (you may have to pay some portion of GSTon it, which is not duties, I think it is still cheaper to buy from a US company.)

4. I agree that Sony stuffs are more expensive in Canada (approx 15-25% extra), while the Canon/Nikon/Olympus have similar price in Canada as in US. This is due to Sony's distribution network problem. Canon/Nikon/Olymnpus have better distribution networks. (I will appologize and correct me if I am wrong).

I believe SONY's in Canada come with a one year warranty while the US models have a 90 day warranty. The 707 still has a few bugs. Try bidding on one at ebay.ca-you might save on the taxes.

Hi Dale,

I was on http://www.henrys.com tonight and they have the Sony 707 for 1299. They are in Toronto I believe and have good service.

I tried to find legitimate deals in the US on the 707, but most seemed to be Grey market cameras. I gave up and took the Camera Canada $1599 price to FutureShop, where they had the camera in stock and they matched the price ($200 off). Maybe not the best deal out there, but an hour later, I was home taking pictures. Plus I have the Canadian Warranty. No regrets
