Few pics with SD800 IS I purchased at BestBuy Yesterday

Well said Gail - this person took their time to help others, which if nothing else deserves our thanks.

While I do appreciate people to post pictures from new cameras, I really think it is not a nice idea to rush to post pictures like these that may not do any merit for those who are seeking info for their buying decision. Apparently, this set of pictures can't be used as any reference. I saw someone posted a reply in this thread that he won't buy this camera based on the sample pictures in this thread. I just want to say don't judge a camera base on someone who is still learning how to use the new camera.

While I am by no mean an expert on the subject, I still think these are useful samples. Pay more attention on these:
  • the noise level in the sky/cloud areas
  • the noise level at the shadow areas
  • the comparison of shots with/without AiAF
  • exposure in general
  • color (but it's typical with Canon, so no surprise..)
  • the details
  • the shots under different light level
... just to name a few more items, but again I am not an expert. I do think we have many varieties in those sample shots to assess the technical nature of the camera. Beside, a great framing would be a composition of the above items. What is really missing here is our imagination ...

Hi Gail !

I have to agree with you that we need a bit more indulgence here because this person is admitting to being new and simply coming here seeking advice and comments in order to grow. As I said in my earlier post below, this fairly new person seems to have captured the best images I've seen yet of the SD800 and I went on to comment that I don't think the photographer has done anything wrong at all. Compositionally, the images are rather bland, but that's ok! He'll grow and learn to all the compositional rules and then go on to learn to break them creatively. Ha ha.

In fairness there seems to be two things going on here. The photographer is asking us how he's doing. Most of us are instead looking to see how this new camera is doing! LOL!!!

Compostionally, he simply needs to eliminate so many conflicting elements in the frame. Simply identify a subject, eliminate non-relevant elements that don't add to that subject. Then utlize the best perspective he can find to highlight that subject (Rule of Thirds, color impact, sidelighting for greater contrast and mood, etc.).

As to the camera itself, as I stated, thus far he's presented the cleanest looking images of the SD800 that I've seen so far posted here. This may well change before the weekend is over. I'm still not really wow'ed yet but the camera technically, but as I also said in my below post, we may yet see some great images coming from the SD800. Time will tell.

Gail . . . Packy and Sinan are really curious about my SD710 IS. I briefly posted a few comments which are good so far. I'll let everybody know in greater detail in the coming week or so. Waving!

"like these" is very subjective. As I've said, I've seen worse, but I never hit the person over the virtual head.

In all sincerity, this issue is not what you said but how you said it. Put yourself in the position of being new?

It took me weeks to post my first images in the Nikon Talk Forum some time I ago. I was a nervous wreak and, quite frankly, my images were pretty lousy. But everyone there treated me with respect, give me encouragement and advice. As a result I became (hopefully) a better photographer...and am still here and learning. If I had been hit over the head by folks telling me how c$@&&! my photos were, I'd probably never participated again.

I read the post too and that would be a shame if someone did that. On the other hand, for example, when I first got the SD700 and shared images, a few said not to judge by mine because I was too experienced, pro canon, etc. Go figure.

A person should not judge a camera by any one set of images.
I just want to say don't judge a camera base on someone
who is still learning how to use the new camera.
Excellent point! Now, let's all help newbies in a spirit of encouragement and constructive criticism.

I'm not an expert, nor even good with taking photo's. I don't know how to properly frame or how light exposure works.

I just knew that the SD800 IS is very new, and wanted to post some pics to see if they were any good or not, I now know the answer.

I mainly am using this camera to learn, as this is the first digital camera that I have ever owned.

Everything is set to auto.

For some reason, when taking video with the camera, whenever there is a light source, the camera will glare and have vertical lines of "light" on the camera ruining the video.

Is this common? I also noticed on the LCD sometimes there would be red "streaks" on the LCD.

I don't know if this is normal, as I didn't see this with the one I was playing with in BestBuy.

Not sure.

Thanks for the criticism though. It can only make me better.

Will try to do better next time.

Thanks

For a first time digital camera owner and the pround owner of an Sd800, I think your pictures are great. No one but yourself knows what those images mean to you and what you were thinking when you took them. Have fun, experiment and don't let others dissuade you.

Good luck and keep shootin'

From looking at your profile, it seems that you're 19 years old, and three months ago you were considering purchasing a Canon 30D. Did you ever get that camera? You do have a lot to learn, and the first thing to suggest would be reading some of the posts on this forum, certainly before you consider yourself capable of making an informed judgment as to the performance of any camera. Hello,
I purchased the SD800 a few days ago from Best Buy.

If someone can give me step by step instructions on how to post the pictures, I will do say as I have taken over 100.

Fuji F30, Nikon 7900 The SD 700 and a 5D, 1DMll

Thanks so much for sharing your photos with us, JMowery! I'm considering purchasing this camera, too, so I'm very interested in seeing samples.

It's interesting that the photos with the Face Detection "on" were noticeabley sharper than with it "off".

I agree that it was very rude and inappropriate for anyone to criticize your photos. I appreciate your willingness to share your expience. Please keep posting! Would love to hear what you are learning about the camera. It's very true that each new camera brings a learning experience so keep shooting and have fun!

Hi

You have an F30 sd700 and sd800? Blimey why so many similar cams? Any impressions of pic quality on the sd800?
