Tokina wide angle 16-50

They announced this and the 50-135 2.8 what feels to be 6 months ago... I truly hate "paper releases" of products. Grrr... I've already bought the Tamron 17-50 and now i'm happy with it; that's the only kind of punishment I can levy upon Tokina for their retarded policies. I really wanted the Tokina though... too bad for them.

Aren't they supposed to shed some light regarding their new lenses during Photokina? They certainly look interesting and I hope we see some real samples soon

I sold my SIgma 18-50 because I was unhappy with the (lack of) range, it was neither as wide or as long as stated, and the AF was slow for an EX lens. I tried a tamron 28-75 and found it to be perfect optically, but I wanted wider. I am eagerly awaiting the tokina 16-50, to see how it compares with the tamron 17-50. The extra MM will be useful, on a crop camera, it's the difference between 24mm and 28mm on a FF camera. That's pretty big if you ask me. I was going to buy a tamron, but I think i'll wait to see how this one fares. Hopefully more info will be released at photokina.

I'm also in the market for a fast WA-zoom, I hope I can stand the temptation of the Tamron.

I don't get it whyTokina is so late to release it's own. Maybe they were too busy producing for Pentax, so there was no time for their own products...

The design of the lenses has a common source but Pentax produce their own lenses with their cooatings. I have read this on several forums and assume it to be correct.

The Pentax equivalent to this lens, and the 50-135 for that matter are due out next spring, these will have HSM motors in them, not sure what the Tokinas have.

Since these lenses are jointly developed by Tokina and Pentax, you probably won't see the Tokina version until next March when Pentax releases their version. :)

Wasn't it the end of last spring when Tokina "paper released" these lenses? So they're making us wait almost a year from their "realease" date... now that my friends is ridiculous.

I've heard of many people on this forum recount their displeasure with Tokina taking almost a year to actually release lenses that they announced.

Just b/c it's marketing doesn't mean it's smart... they're turning people off. My $.02.

Agreed. I was/am really keen to see the Tokina as i am looking to replace my kit lens. Looks like I will end up going for the Tamron instead - especially if it is not out until next year.

That is a pity, because Tokina have made many fine lenses. I had a 25-50mm f4 zoom in the 80'ties, very compact, nice wide-to-normal range, and constant maximum aperture. And well build too.

I have an old Tokina 80-200 2.8 that I am happy with. Yes, they make great lenses, that's why i'm dissapointed in their business decisions, b/c they teased me for a year (it's annoying too).

If we were takling about Quantary or Promaster paper releasing their lenses nobody would be upset.

I think Sigma announced and delivered their new 50-150 2.8 zoom in the time we've waited for these new Tokinas to hit the shelves. Oh well.. they're quite busy making lenses for Pentax so I guess we get the shaft at the moment.

I was just looking at the Tokina website (thkphoto). Regarding the three lenses announced back then, there were two press releases on September 1st. The 50-135 is to be available November and the 10-17 fisheye is to be available October. No press release for the 16-50! :( That does not seem promising.

According to a Tokina Japan press release in July, the lens is scheduled to be available in a Nikon mount in late November. For some reason, I'm having trouble pasting the translated link.

If they include the USM-like focus motor in the Tokina-badged version for Canon mount I won't mind the wait. If we still get an old-school motor and have to wait even longer than the originally scheduled november/december time frame, I probably won't wait for it.

Some years ago (2-3) they announced a medium tele zoom lens (I think a 70-200mm f2.8)but they never produced it.I hope this is not the case here.

I got impatient with Tamron's release of the 17-50 and bought the Sigma 17-70 off the shelf. I have no regrets and will keep the Sigma b/c I don't believe the Tamron fits my needs as well as the Sigma - so it was a good choice.

But I did handle the Tokina 12-24 when I was buying my ultra wide lens and it was a jewell and a very substantial feel to it. If the 16-50 has that same feel and quality to it, it will surely be a serious competitor to Tamron, Sigma, and Canon.
