The Thunderbirds were in town this last weekend along with a few flybys of some seldom seen USAF jets. The weather was terrible on Saturday although Sunday was nice. We also had the opportunity to meet Nicole Malachowski, she is the first woman Thunderbird pilot. She was flying the #3 jet. Comments are welcome, just thought I would share these shots taken with my antique 10D.

Amazing Shots.

I live in Geneva and if I had known about the show I would have been there.

What lens did you use?

Hi Dave,

I used the 100-400 L IS USM. I just picked it up this summer and really like it.

This is Rockford's second year having an air show. Last year only had about 30,000 people attend and so far this year I've heard there were over 80,000 even with the bad weather on Saturday. They plan to have it again next year so keep an eye on http://www.flyrfd.com , they should post it there.

The 10D is my first real digital camera and I still think it does a great job. I'll someday upgrade to something newer but it works well for me now. Thanks for the comments.

Actually it was just the Thunderbirds, there was an L-39 jet painted like the Blue Angels #7 but the actual Blue Angels were not there. The L-39 looks like it would be a fun aircraft to have....

Hi,

i just looked at you gallery and i must say - WOW! Terriffic shots here, the 100-400 IS really delivers! My own (limited) experience with shooting air shows and things flying around are that it´s quite hard to expose right, most of the time i got a totally blown out sky or underexposed planes :( I see from the EXIF that the show took place in the afternoon, didn´t you have any exposure/dynamic range problems?
Shots like

i do never get. Did you shoot RAW and apply fill light later on or use shadow highlight in photoshop to compensate underexposed pictures?
Thanks for your info.
Markus

Hi Markus,

These were shot without using RAW, I haven’t done much with the RAW format. I went back to look at the original image you pointed out and I didn’t apply much PS to it. I lightened it a little and did a slight crop to cut out a little of the sky. I think the sun was also just in the right spot to help out. I do use the shadow/highlight now and then which can also help.

Thanks for the comments,
Jeff

Very good pictures. Thanks for sharing.

I did not understand the jet power outhouse though. Seen (heared) for the first time.
