Hi All !

I done a quick search on this forum to find whether there is any information about the availability of this lens. The results were old posts (latest from april 2006).

As far as I understood this has been discontinued by Nikon. Anyway, I have two questions:

1. Does anyone knows whether this lens can be found anywhere in stock ?

2. Is there any available Nikon prime that is as fast as this one or somewhere around 1.8-2.0 ? I know there are 50 f/1.4 and 50 f/1.8 but I'd be more interested in a focal not larger than 28.

Thank you in advance

After looking and testing the Nikon 28 f1.4D and the Sigma 30 f1.4 HSM DC side by side, I decided on the Sigma as I didn't think that the Nikon IQ was that much better than the Sigma. Definately not worth $2000 AUD more quality wise as well.

Go and give the Sigma a try, it's great. I have found mine to be so razor sharp at f2 it's almost drawing blood, and it has shown to have acceptable crispness at f1.4 for my friends that have used it.

The bokeh at so wide aps' is breathtaking as well. It also has HSM focusing so being able to just grab the focus and adjust it so quickly is a huge boon to me.

As I shoot 99% with available light the f1.4 does make a huge difference to me. Today I finally ordered a Nikon 85 f1.4D, hopefully the best $895 US I have spent, ( not including my 70-200 vr).

The lens has been recently discontinued, and out of production for considerably longer. Finding a new copy is going to be virtually impossible, and the prices on eBay pretty much reflect this. The 28 f/1.4 is quickly getting in Noct Nikkor levels of silliness, as far as prices go.

You next best alternative in the Nikon catalogue is the 35mm f/2, which is a rather fine lens, or to look for a 28mm f/2 AI-S second hand (if that is your cup of tea). Otherwise the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is a pretty good alternative. I have one and must say it is a very, very sharp lens and spends a lot of time on my camera for available light shooting.

Thank you for your replies.

Both of you pointed to Sigma 30mm and I think I'll go for it.

Actually I need a prime that is fast enough for low light and decently sharp for my D80.

Is a 30mm on APS-C the EX DC HSM, isn't it ? Just to be sure.

Thank you again.

Dont call me a troll but where Nikon has NOTHING, Canon has the 24/1.4, 35/1.4 and 50/1.2, all with USM ("AF-S") and better high ISO sensor performance. If low light shooting is your thing, consider Canon.

All of these solutions exist for Nikon - buzz off, troll.

I'd love nothing more than a 5D along with a 35mm 1.4 and 24mm 1.4. These lenses would really be ideal for my type of photography, especially with the 5D's high ISO performance.

But the price is too much for this hobbyist.

I can buy a Nikon D200 and a Sigma 30mm 1.4 for less than the price of the 5D body alone. Yes, the DX crop factor means the lens isn't as wide, and the D200's high ISO performance isn't what the 5D can do, but the set up is good enough for me.

It really is a good point about Canon. Nikon has really nice glass in especially in the longer range and zooms but Canon really has the advantage for low light wide angles. Nikon has nothing to compete with the Canon 24 and 35 1.4s. It seems odd that Nikon discontinued the 28 1.4 when it was the only wide fast lens. What would be great for the 1.5 sensor is a 24 1.4 but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm considering buying a used 28 1.8 but it's reallly too expensive especially now that they are so hard to find.

Nikon offers:

28mm 1.4D AF, 35mm F/2D AF, 50mm F/1.4 AF. But I agree with you , anything wider than 50mm is of a low quality or does not exist at all. Apart from 28mm 1.4D AF which is a standout and has been disconitnued because of the its hight cost.

28mm 1.4 Nikon on a crop is just a normal lens. 24mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4 on a 5d are both actually wide angle lenses.

Why oh why would you sell? (unless circumstances force you to? hope not).

That gallery is a repost but I am delighted to see them again. Great shots and AMAZING color.

Precisely, why are you telling me this? If you compare something - compare apples with apples and bananas with bananas.

What the guy is saying is that Nikon currently offers no very fast wide options. While Canon has several.

All Nikon needs is a 24 1.4 that sells for less than $1500 and everyone would be happy! :)

Didn't I list the best quality and the fatest lenses offered by Nikon already?

We all can see that there are no wide angle lenses offered by Nikon at the moment. What is the point of coming to 'Nikon forum talk' and going and over about the same subject? To rub it on the noses of those who use Nikon products?
