I was in my local Jessops today and I was asking if he knew if there would be an EOS 40D coming out soon. The salesman told me that there are no plans for a 40D, but Canon are bringing out another full frame DSLR to compliment the 5D.

Has anyone else got wind of this ?

We know the 5D is due to be updated by March 2007. The 30D is not going to be replaced until Sept 2008. Unless Canon switches away from its 18 month product cycle, every DSLR will be updated in its due time.

I agreed. I'm not sure why everyone is so into pinpointing the exact month a new camera will be announced. It's bound to happen. You may just have to wait an extra 6 months. In the mean time, I'm sure their current camera will do. I've noticed these "upgrades" are really just minor improvements and nothing to get too excited about.

Now when they come out with a 5D body with the AF of a 1 series and 8fps, then I would be super excited.

I believe the OP is talking about another FF camera. Not an upgrade or replacement for the 5D. Possibly a smaller/cheaper model so amateurs can stretch their wallets! Gerry

Well, I should say the 5D will be replaced with a newer model, just like that the 20D replaced the 10D, the 30D replaced the 20D, etc.

If Canon releases a new model while keeping or updating the existing models, it could be happen outside of the 18 month cycle of the existing models.

A good example would be the 5D itself as it was a brand new product and it was released independent of the 1D/1Ds and 20D product cycles.

Another FF model below the 5D would not be a bad idea but it seems unlikely unless it is to replace the 30D line.

Well if you add FF to a 30D you have a 5D, so If they introduce something in between it will "replace" either the 30D or the 5D in sales.

What would they do, put the Rebel Xt focusing in a FF camera, in a plastic body?

It might have to be above the 5D to fit anything new in.

Another rumor spreader. NO WE DO NOT KNOW THAT IT IS DUE TO BE UPDATED IN MARCH 2007

You or somebody that told you made that up!

March 2007 is a very plausible date for a 5D update, based on an 18 month upgrade cycle, especially as this would coincide with the 20th anniversary of the EOS system.

Of course the 5D could be replaced 6 months later, on a 2 year update cycle to match the 1 series.

Then again we don't actually know that the 5D will be replaced at all, although we'd all be extremely surprised if it wasn't.

A 5D replacement at Photokina on the say-so of a Jessops salesman... well that's probably the lest likely scenario of them all. A few years ago, when Jessops were a camera shop rather than a Dixons clone, it might have had a shred of credibility, but not now...

The reason people are interested is because some of us would like a new camera for this years photo season. I know, I just have to wait until they release it, and of course I can still use my old camera this year, but I am more than a little interested for obvious reasons.

This is just a rumor so please don't blame on me if it's not correct ;)

Name: EOS 7D
Release Date: Spring 2007 (maybe end of 2006)
Image sensor: same as 5D
Continuos Speed: 3 fps
Shutter: 30 - 1/4000 sec
Body: smaller and lighter than 5D
List Price: around 250000 yen (apprx, $2200)

Sounds like a cheaper version of 5D.
