Thanks, Steve. I believe that the L lenses have given me an extra dimension with the camera. Using a basic lens probably negates the improvements as far as IQ is concerned. Although the kit lens can give good results stopped down, it's probably time Canon produced a better kit lens. Mind you I suspect many 400D users will either judge their photos on the PC screen or print at 4x6".

A friend who hates Canon cameras (they are toys according to him) is looking at upgrading to a D2X but never prints bigger than postcard.

Does the increased resolution of the sensor necessitate better
glass? The mediocre results of other posters with this camera and
kit lens suggests that the 10MP sensor and Digic processing is less
forgiving of cheap lens..
