After waiting quite some time, my new flash for my R1 has arrived .

This is a first sample image taken in bounce mode using Lumiquest 20/80 to projecting some. light forward into the eyes.

Thanks Ovan , I find that in bounce shots without some forward projected light the images tend to look a little flat plus I already had the Lumiquest from back in my film days.

With R1 you have 10 MP to work with, so use them. I tilt the R1 so the flash is aimed at what I want (high on a wall) and zoom back so all the subject is well inside the frame. Then when you do your post processing (PS) crop at the correct angle to the straighten the image out. This works very well for portraits. Just shoot away (fast & taking lots of images) with the flash aimed where you want the light to come from(s) (many subjects don't like to wait for the photographer to fiddle with their equipment). Sometimes one gets a colorcast from the wall color when doing this, but its easy to PP/ PS this out too (some have the subject hold a white and or gray card at the start for reference with color correction). I do not, but I'm not getting paid for this image.

Great pictures are NOT taken, they are made.

Interesting concept will have to try that one

Take the scenic route! Life is too short to do otherwise.

Lovely shot and smart looking dog!! She makes a good model...

BTW, I'm having a flash HVL-F32X, is it the same as your F32C? are there any difference?

Sorry about that mine is the 32X but I must have hit the c key rather than the x,
so just a typo on my part. Thanks for spotting it.
Just an update I think this flash is going to be great for my purpose

Thanks Patty, this is our girl "Holly" and she does not mind having photo's taken of her most of the time.

However you know what dogs are like and on this occasion she really wanted to go to sleep on the couch.
Thanks Geoff
how sweet!

Congrats with your flash.

The photo is stunning... So sweet! Adorable. He doesn't look very
happy, but I think he is. ;) A career as a model..

Excellent photo with nice understated lighting. Does this flash really take 8 seconds to recharge each time as the specs on B&H say? That's what's keeping me from buying it for my R1. Cathy

I must admit I have not timed it as yet but it does not seem very long at all and has not held me up in any way. I suppose that charging time becomes more critical if one normally fires off a large number of shots , but for myself I tend to look at the shot a little first so my shot to shot time is quite long..

It's NOT the flash that takes long to recharge, it's the R1/ waiting for the camera to process the image and write it to the flash memory. If you just turn on the flash and trigger it with the test button, it will recharge in 1~3 seconds.

So are you saying that virtually any flash unit on the R1 will take about the same amount of time to be ready for the next picture (given the same camera settings)? Cathy H.
