Hi, my Canon EF 100mm macro recently died (error 99), my problem is that I am in a country that doesn't have any repair shops (Malta). I was told I would need to send it to the UK.

When I put it on my 10D it makes a couple of whirling sounds (like it is focusing) and when I turn on the camera it makes another sound then the error 99. Do you think it is worth sending it in to get fixed as I am guessing that it is the electronics that have gone and hence will probably cost a fortune to get repaired? Anyone else ever had the error 99 with the lens? I don't think it is the connectors and it is not the camera.

If you send it to a Canon facility, they should give you a quote first before fixing it. You can then accept or refuse the quote. It's worth sending it in. I would if I were you. Some people are sometimes quite surprised with how cheap some repairs are.

I'm from Malta and I also had a er99 problem on my 20d i also have the 100mm Macro but my problem was from the body not the lens I bought mine from Malta but lens from overseas I told the agent in Malta who sent me to their technician in St Venera to fix the problem. Problem was fixed no more error99 and for free as it was still under warranty the body that is..

Thank Oliver, do you know the technicians name in St Venera? I don't think it is the contact points as it happened after a sudden jolt to the lens. It also makes a noise when put on the camera.

It's a common problem of the old 100/2,8 Macro (non-USM) that the focussing motor dies. Did you try switch the AF switch to manual focus and put the lens on?

Thanks Oliver, I will give him a try.

It is a USM version Butzl. I have tried manual focus and it still give the error. The only thing that happens diffently is if I have it on A-DEP mode it makes a different noise when I turn on the camera, but I still get error 99.

Well I'll be, I managed to fix it! I was having another sulk about my favourite lens when I thought I would give it another shot. So I turn my camera on while praying to the heavens but nup the dreaded error 99. Hmmm lets see what happens if I turn it off and turn it back on while holding down the shutter, a wild shot I know. But low and behold click goes the camera, everything looked fine, no error 99, photo of my wall looked ok. Surely not, so I turned it off and on and still no error, took a load of photos to test out the focusing and no problems with either manual or auto.

Thanks again Oliver, I went there on thursday but being Malta :) I guess he decided to close that day, thankfully. At least I now know there is a canon technician in Malta.
