Survey: What is your all-purpose (walkabout) lens?

I just got back from 3 weeks in Afghanistan and shot more than 1 k images. I was there on another work assaignment (not for photography) but the place was a gold mine of images and my 5D turned out to be a great ice breaker and ambassador as well. I took several lenses (too many) and ended up using my KM 18-200 90% of the time. It performed very well but I did not like the lens creep and it was a bit slow to focus at times. The main thing I needed was the range offered. I had a KM 28-75 f/2.8 which is a great lens but did not have the range I needed. Many of the images I got required quick set and shoot technique, hand-held and often while traveling in a car.

I'd sure love to hear about other, maybe better, lenses that fall within this range and are portable enough to not pose problems while on the move.

That's very interesting.

What is the chromatic abberation like on your KM18-200 at the high zoom range?

I wasn't that happy with it in my KM18-200, though I like the convenience of the entire zoom range.

Film camera days it was the 28-70G.

Now APS-C and 5D, it is the 17-35G, in fact the two are nearly permanently mated!

Usually with a matching Minolta 1.4x teleconvertor. Of course I've been shooting a lot of birds this years so that's why this is my choice lens.

Burrowing Owl shot a few months ago with the above combo:

Of course it depends on where I am walking, but I really enjoy my Sigma 18-200 DC as a general purpose lens. It definately goes with me on vacation when I need to pack light.

Having fun with photos. A little searching can go a long way.

If I just want to take one lens and one camera out, the above is what I usually pick.
