getting R800 to equal colors of PictureMate

I've now printed 30 or 40 prints of the same few images, and I still can't get my new R800 to have the colors that appear to match my screen like my PictureMate Express does.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 6000, and I'm really hoping not to buy a few hundred dollars worth of calibrating stuff just to get my R800 to work as well as my $60 PIctureMate does.

I'm using original OEM Epson inks in both, Epson Photo premium glossy paper.

With the R800, I'm telling CS2 to let photoshop manage color, using the Epson BestGlossy Premium profile provided by Epson (there are two - one that ends in .icc and one that ends in R1 - anyone know the difference?). In the printer driver, I'm telling it ICM and no color correction.

With the PictureMate, I'm allowing Photoshop to manage colors, but the profile is set to Adobe RGB 1998. In the printer driver, its set to no color correction.

Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong. I've ready so many posts here, and I'm still stuck.

Thanks for any help,
Dan
