I know that there are a lot of old threads about portable storage out there. What are you using, why and how is it working?

I am looking at the Epson units but was wondering......

I have an old mindstore unit and don't want to end up like I did there.... broken and not able to fix it!

i have a 120GB USB external HDD that i picked up on ebay for $56. works great, but it is amazing how fast you can fill up 100+GBs. best buy has some 300GB external drives for about $100.

Avoid LaCie. I recently lost a 500 gig LaCie hard drive . . .thought I could just replace the case and be good as new . . .opened it up and found TWO MAXTOR hard drives . . .the same two 250 gig internals that Best Buy carries for 79.95.

I paid extra for the LaCie name. . . because it's one I trusted . . .but no more :(

My Western Digital has been humming along on my desk for 3 years straight :)

Kind Regards

I have a number of Lacies, 3 80GB d2s and 2 500 GB D2s. I have to say that, although they still go I have had problems and there's no support for them in the UK. One of the 80GB drives rattles around a bit, I keep meaning to take it apart to see what's loose but never get around to it. One of the 500's, which is just over a year old, has lost the 400 fire wire but works with the 800.

As I say, there's no support from LaCie who just refer you back to the retailer who obviously isn't interested once the year is up.

Toshiba seem to be promoting some good value drives in the Uk at the moment but I think my days of paying a premium for style from Lacie are over.

a several year old FlashTrax 80gig portable HD by SmartDisk. Only complaint that I have, which might be an issue with all portable h/d's, is the battery does not tolerate cold weather very well. Even in 30 degrees and below. If I keep the battery close to my body, that still doesn't do the trick. Other than that..it has been a true work horse without failure.

I think at the time the unit sold for around $600

Hope this helps.

By portable, I assume you mean for field use. I use the HyperDrive...

User replaceable HD and it uses NiMH AA's.

I use the PD70X, which is the same as the Hyperdrive. It's been great for traveling, or, recently, for covering a baseball game. At 8 fps you can fill up a 4GB card pretty fast, and this device is able to offload shots I've already taken before I'm able to fill up another card. Then I can transfer all the copied shots over USB back at the computer.

Thanks, for your opinions...... I am still wondering about the Epson 4000, any one have any experience with this one or something similar?

The Epson P-4000 is incredibly expensive for what you get. I'd be inclined to get a laptop for $100 less, with a larger hard drive and screen, better speakers, and more versatility. The only advantage the P-4000 has is smaller size. I think it's primarily aimed at people who have too much money, but are afraid of cocaine.

My Apacer Combo and my PD70X are still serving me well when traveling.

So just the case was broken? I was always under the impression that Lacie didn't make hard drives. Do the Maxtors work? I'm just a bit confused as to what the problem was that you had.

Old, slow underpowered Toshiba laptop, with 15 gig HD, attached to a Simpletech 120 gig portable HD.

Not really great when you're away from power, but I'm not a wildly prolific shooter--and I'm usually near a wall plug or have an inverter on my truck--so with about 11GB of cards, I'm in pretty good shape, no matter what.

I'd prefer an Epson P4000, but I'd far prefer Bill Gates' fortune to mine, too. :)

No . . .not just the case . . .that was my hope as the hard drive was only 6 months old. Unfortunately, the entire hard drive was caput. Thankfully, I had everything backed up to DVD's.

The point I was making was . . .it was two 250 gig harddrives made by Maxtor. The exact same internals (same model numbers) as the ones sold at Best Buy for $79.95. I could have bought two of those to begin with and saved myself the extra $250 I spent to have a case that said LaCie on the cover.

I trusted the LaCie name . . .much more so than Maxtor, or I'd be $250 richer today.

It's like buying a Rolls Royce . . .getting home, lifting the hood and finding a John Deer Lawn Tractor motor inside.

. . .Is this point really that unclear????? :)

A bit yes, since I assumed that you knew Lacie doesn't make the drives, that's part of why I didn't know what you were getting at. I think Lacie does alot of rebadging like with there monitors.

Also you said "I recently lost a 500 gig LaCie hard drive . .
.thought I could just replace the case and be good as new . .
.opened it up and found TWO MAXTOR hard drives . . .the same two

At the end there you never said the Maxtors were bad, so I didn't know what happened.

Don't feel bad though, I don't think you got ripped off. The two drives are 80 a piece, plus a case that can hold 2 drives is like 50 bucks.

Was there a warranty? And a warranty extension through your credit card (if used)?

Maxtor, WD, Seagate, Samsung, Toshiba are all about the same reliability wise.

Best thing is though, you were backed up!
. . .Is this point really that unclear????? :)

I also took night of your screenname and saw your books and that
you lived in Ohio. I'm in Cleveland here. Ever do any teaching?
With any luck, my books do some teaching to the folks who are able to wade all the way through them. I've been successful at ducking most teaching opportunities as they crop up, although I just signed on to lead a digital photography workshop in September.

I'm generally terrified of large groups, so teaching was not a career option for me. For some weird reason, television audiences don't count, so I've actually been on more television shows than live shows.
