Nikon Europe today apologizes, in a formal announcement, to customers and admits that the new D2Xs NEF files are not compatible with any current Nikon software except PP. Nikon are promissing soon to release a 30 days trial version of Capture NX.

Better late than never. I can't believe Nikon could do that in the first place.

Speed is significant and interesting but accuracy is downright fascinating

Releasing a new professional camera without proper software support is simply not good enough. Too bad.

Thanks for calling our attention to this obvious error by Nikon. Sounds like they're scrambling to fix it.

I'm a technical manager for a company which builds electronic products for consumer and business users, and I've been involved from time to time in errors of this general sort. They're almost always due to poor internal communication. In this case, it sounds like the Nikon product firmware developers aren't talking to the Nikon application software developers. The geographic, time-zone, language, and cultural distance between these groups can make good communication challenging.

Canon does the same thing - change the format so they can have a cut off for supporting older file formats. Camera manufacturers really need to stop this. They did it with the 1D2N and the 30D. Each camera had the same sensor and same insides.

It would be nice to have a beta of the new NX software though... They should look at adobe with its lightroom...

I am a bit freeky to buy software without having being able to work with it for a couple of weeks...

I too am involved with product dev/release processes (peripherally) and I feel that it is either what you say, or that perhaps the internal schedules were synched for a simlutaneous launch (NX+D2Xs). Perhaps Nikon refused to let the NX lag hold up the D2Xs. The software camp clearly stumbled and missed a published delivery date. I tend to think that publicly throwing the dev team under the bus like this will only serve to motivate them properly in the future. A gutsy move, but one I personally agree with.

I read this thinking that they were apologizing for not being able to produce enough product to meet demand... then this little gem of a bomb shell. Unbelievable is right... I would suppose that if the D2X gets the firmware upgrade the same thing is going to happen???

Sounds like another D200 WB encryption round ... at least to me.

I feel bad for anyone owning a D2Xs and shoots NEF, but the silver lining may be NX will be released anytime. I am very anxious to see what this product will do.

Or, more likely a manager agreed to an impossible deadline that the software developers could never, ever meet.
I've seen this happen SO many times in the software industry.

Nikon are promissing soon to release a 30 days trial version of Capture NX.
So, let me get this straight.. Nikon are promising that in compensation the owners of the D2Xs will be able to download and use the free 30-day trial version of Nikon Capture NX.

How will this be any different from those people who aren't owners of a D2Xs who will be able to download the 30-day trial version of Nikon Capture NX?

Hmm.. It sounds like some weazel words to me, with the real meaning of "Sorry for the inconvenience, but as soon as we can get around to finishing the software you'll be able to download the trial version of Nikon Capture NX, just like everyone else. In the meantime, tough *******."

Surely, as compensation they should be giving the owners at least the Nikon Camera Control software for free (when it's released), especially as this camera is so expensive?

Remember that Nikon's new baby, NIK software, is doing NX...may be some growing pains getting integrated into the whole organization.

It is upsetting...but it had better be out soon, because D2XS or not i want NX

Oh, come on, it's like landing an airplane - it's not whether you bounce it's what happens afterwards.

I do appreciate both the deadlines for production and software, the sometimes disparate outcomes, but I am glad to see that Nikon is going to remedy the situation - presumable with a short time.

Also, looking to see what NX will do.

Anybody know if the new D2Xs NEF files will be compatible with ACR in CS2? Not that I am getting a D2Xs (already have the d2x) i just worry about the firmware upgrade.

D2X NEF files after the firmware update will stay the same and will be recognized by every software that is currently capable of opening D2X NEF files including NV 6.27, NC 4.4, ACR, Bibble and others. If you ask about D2Xs NEF files? That's another story.

So at least, the latest website news says within 28 days.

D2Xs owners can download it ASAP, whatever that means, whereas
us common mortals must wait for summer 2006 whatever that means.

duhhh to Nikon

Hlep me get this crystal clear. If I bought a D2Xs today, would I be able to work with the NEFs in PS CS2?

I'm about to make a decision to buy this camera and it irritates me to no end to think that it's crippled right out of the box because Nikon could not get its act together. This is inexcuseable, like buying a car only to have the salesman yell as you leave the lot "So Sorry, there's no brakes and you can't stop the damn thing!"

Digital cameras are essentially computers with lenses. What Nikon did was the equivalent of releasing hardware without the OS to support it. And they wonder why people run away from them. For $4700, they should not be selling you a partially functional product, only to hit you up for several hundred dollars of software down the road. And "down the road" with them could be Sept!!!!
