What are Canon up to?

Canon abandon the high end prosumer.

Canon neglect IS for the point and shoots (with some exceptions).

Canon incrementally upgrade their fine range of cameras but have stopped truly innovating.

Whenever some other manufacturer brings out a well-made and innovative camera Canon reponds by dropping their prices.

Canon sells squillions of well made but increasingly technically middle of the road cameras.

Canon are smart and make big profits.

I guess that the Sony A100 stomping and trumpeting a vast range of compatible lenses (all anti-shake or image-stabilised or whatever new name this basic function has) will mean that Canon's big range of non-IS lenses will be "old hat".

However - don't worry - I guess that Canon will just shave their body prices a bit more, bracket the market with an in-betweener dslr body or two, and sell more cameras.

So what is the point of smart-alecky innovation when you can keep on increasing market share without spending big bucks on r&d?

You have to hand it to those guys down in Canon-town they are bullet-proof and surely know how to run a sharp business.
